🍷 Ingredients:
- red wine – Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Garnacha (one standard bottle)
- Grand Marnier – this orange liqueur adds some sweetness and fruit flavor to the red wine.
- Brandy – blackberry brandy would be delicious.
- simple syrup – use my homemade simple syrup recipe if you don’t want to buy it from the store.
- Water – this is to make the ice block that the fruit and flowers float in.
- Fruit: dark purple and black grapes, blackberries, pomegranate seeds, golden berries and or husk cherries; you could also use black plums.
- Orange slices (blood oranges, preferred) -fresh or dried orange slices can be used. Dried oranges will not add as much flavor, but look a little prettier with a very Autumn color scheme.
- Edible flowers and herbs – we love chocolate cosmos, zinnias, black pansies, basil, and dahlias. Other spooky options could include marigolds, daisies, echinacea, squash blossoms, nasturtium, and calendula. Use edible flowers specifically packaged from the grocery store or wash well if collected from your own (pesticide/insecticide-free garden.)
- club soda – this adds a little carbonation to the red Halloween sangria, we also have other options in the variations section.

Optional Garnish:
Garnish your glass of sangria with creepy gummy worms, a sliced orange, other fruit, or a cinnamon stick.
Substitutions and Variations
- Triple sec – can be used in place of Grand Marnier since it’s an orange liqueur, but it has a stronger orange flavor.
- Dry ice – the smoky effect is so much fun watch. Add the dry ice between the serving bowl and another bowl before serving.
- Ginger ale – swap in place of the club soda if desired. You could also use seltzer or lemon lime soda.
🔪 Instructions:
Step 1: Grab a small bowl to create the ice block; measure it relative to your serving bowl to make sure it will fit nicely inside. Fill the small bowl ⅓ of the way with water. Freeze until it is solid – for a couple of hours or overnight.
Step 2: After the block of ice is frozen, arrange the flowers and fruit on top. Start with the grapes since they are bulkier.
Step 3: Add in the rest of the ingredients, sprinkled throughout.
Step 4: Fill the bowl with more water so the flowers and fruit are partially submerged. Freeze again until solid (4-6 hours.) If you have any fresh fruit leftover, add it to the finished sangria in step 7.
Pro Tip: You can do the freezing ahead of time so there’s not much left on party day.
Step 5: Remove the fruit block from the freezer. Dip the bottom of the frozen bowl into a bowl of room temperature.
Step 6: While preparing the ice block, you also want to mix up your sangria. In a refrigerator safe pitcher, stir together the red wine, Grand Marnier, brandy, and simple syrup. Refrigerate for several hours, or up to overnight. When the ice block is frozen, pour the sangria into the cauldron or serving bowl.
Step 7: Lift the loosened ice block from the smaller bowl and float on the sangria.
SERVE: Pour in the club soda and garnish with more flowers if needed.
Recipe Tips for Halloween Sangria
- This spooky Halloween sangria recipe makes 8 servings for one bottle of wine.
- When we make Christmas sangria or sangria jello shots we use different fruit. We want this recipe to add to your spooky halloween party, so using dark fruit looks the best and gives all the fall vibes. Certainly, you can change up the fruits and flowers to fit the mood of your decor.
- Some like to use fruit juices (like cranberry juice, pomegranate juice, or orange juice) to make sangria, but with all of the flavor in this one, you don’t need it. However, you can use it and dial back the alcohol some for a weaker punch or make a non-alcoholic version using the juices.
- Only use food-safe, edible flowers that are free from pesticides or herbicides.
- Be sure to rinse both the flowers and fruit thoroughly before adding them to the sangria.
Fun Fact
While sangria is considered a Spanish drink, the Romans often added it to their water thinking it would kill off bacteria. -Spain Like a Local
Recipe FAQs
I always recommend using Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Garnacha for the best taste. Because we are adding so much fruit and other herbs to our black sangria, you can go with a cheaper option than you normally would when just having a glass of wine. Basically any variety of red wine. We also don’t recommend using a white wine for the Halloween sangria.
Usually sangria can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days after taking the fruit out. Use a slotted or wooden spoon to remove the flowers, herbs, and fruit if you are going to put it back in the fridge. On Halloween night, you probably won’t have any left!
