What is a Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino?
It’s a cold Starbucks beverage full of chocolate flavor and comes as a blended drink. Traditionally they are not made with coffee and espresso, but if you have ever visited Starbucks you know that the options and varieties are endless, literally.
Fraps are made with milk, chocolate syrup, chocolate chunks, and ice. This chocolaty frappe is topped with homemade whipped cream and served with drizzled chocolate on top. You can almost think of them as a cold blended cappuccino!
🍫 Ingredients:
- Milk -Milk is used to provide a creamy and smooth base for the frappuccino. Whole milk is the richest, but you can shave off some fat and calories by using a reduced fat milk. Any milk substitute will also work.
- Chocolate syrup – It adds a rich and sweet chocolate flavor to the beverage, enhancing its overall taste. Syrup is the easiest way to get the perfect balance of both sweetness and chocolate flavor in your blended drink.
- Mini chocolate chips – These tiny chocolate morsels are included for that DOUBLE chocolate flavor and add a delightful texture to the frappuccino.
- Ice – ice is crucial to chill and blend the ingredients, resulting in a refreshing and frosty texture that is characteristic of a frappuccino. For best results, use a high-powered blender that can really break down your ice cubes.
- Whipped cream: Whipped cream serves as a creamy and indulgent topping, adding a touch of elegance and enhancing the overall presentation and taste of the frappuccino.

Optional Garnish:
Chocolate drizzle, chocolate chips, cocoa powder, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, chocolate shavings – anything you want!
Substitutions and Variations
- To make a mocha chocolate chip frappuccino: Add in a shot of espresso or strong iced/cold-brewed coffee.
- Milk variations: If you want to use a dairy-free alternative you can swap the whole milk for almond milk, soy milk, plant based low-fat milk like oat milk, or coconut milk.
- More chocolate chunks. You can stir in more chocolate just before serving for more flavor or full chocolate chip pieces. The longer you blend the less noticeable the pieces are.
- Sweeter. Want to make your frap sweeter? Add a couple of dashes of simple syrup, honey, or maple syrup. This makes it sweeter without having to add more chocolate.
- Sugar substitute: If you want to cut back on carbs or calories, you can use a sugar-free chocolate syrup or try unsweetened cocoa powder and a sugar substitute like monkfruit or Stevia. This will change the flavor and balance of your drink, though, so play around with amounts.
- Vanilla bean frappuccino. Instead of using chocolate, add some vanilla ice cream and a teaspoon vanilla extract.
🔪 Instructions:
PREP: The first thing you’ll want to do is pop all of your ingredients into the refrigerator to chill so that they’re extra cold when you’re ready to make your double chocolate chip frappe recipe.
Step 1: Combine one cup milk, chocolate syrup, ice, and mini chocolate chips in a high speed blender.
Step 2: Pulse until the ice has broken into small, frothy pieces, but there are still chocolate chip pieces visible.
Step 3: To be a real barista 😉, drizzle a tablespoon of chocolate syrup around the inside of the glass or in the bottom of the cup, then divide the frap mixture between two glasses.
Step 4: Serve. Top the drinks with whipped cream and more chocolate sauce. You can add a few mini chocolate chips on top as well.
Blend the ice well, but keep some chocolate chip pieces for that signature Starbucks double chocolate chip frappuccino crunch. For larger chunks, blend the milk, ice, and syrup first and then add the chocolate chips and pulse just until they have the texture you’re looking for.
Chill the ingredients: Prior to blending, chill the milk, chocolate syrup, and mini chocolate chips in the refrigerator. This helps maintain the frappuccino’s cold and refreshing texture. Place glasses in the freezer for 5-10 minutes before blending to really keep things cold.
Use a powerful blender (I use a Vitamix) or a dedicated smoothie maker. Start with a low speed and gradually increase it to achieve a smooth and creamy consistency if needed.
Add chocolate chips after breaking down the ice for more substantial crunch in your frappe.
Customize your frappuccino by adding a splash of vanilla extract, a shot of espresso for a mocha twist, or even a scoop of coffee, chocolate, or vanilla ice cream for added creaminess.
Serve immediately: Frappuccinos are best enjoyed right after preparation to capitalize on fresh taste and ideal texture.

Starbucks has a subcategory of creme-based drinks that include both frappuccinos and non-blended drinks. These are drinks that do not contain coffee, and most are decaf. Other Starbucks creme-based drinks include the Strawberries and Creme Frappuccino, Vanilla Bean Frappuccino, Matcha Green Tea Creme Frappuccino, and Chai Cream Frappuccino. These, along with our double chocolate chip creme frappuccino, make great kids’ drinks because they don’t taste like coffee and also they have reduced caffeine!

Now. This isn’t Starbucks ofc. However, I get Starbucks basically every day and it’s drinking of money. So I figured why not try this. I used what I had, which was all the organic stuff (with the butterfly) it’s def healthier but tastes a bit bad. When I get my real ingredients though, yum! I very much recommend it 😀
