Recent events have alerted the sewing community to a growing need for homemade face masks. After talking with several nurses, state health officials, and consulting several online resources, I put together a video tutorial to show how to make a homemade face mask with a piece that will crimp around the nose, stretchy ties, and an inner pocket for adding a filter or additional layers of protection. These masks are similar to a medical mask or surgical mask, but it is vital to check with individual communities/hospitals to see where and how these masks can be utilized. Home use is encouraged!
Please note: this is a homemade face mask of my own design using components thought to be most useful to the average person and perhaps those in close proximity to infectious persons. Please consult hospitals and appropriate officials to determine any special requirements beyond your own personal use. This tutorial and its creator make absolutely no warranties or assertions as to the effectiveness of homemade face masks and this information is provided for educational purposes only.
Homemade Face Mask Video Tutorial:
This is a video tutorial as I would like to put out helpful information as quickly as possible. Please watch the video for complete instructions.
I am including some additional thoughts and information below:
Tips for Sewing Face Masks:
Materials
- The nose crimp piece really makes the mask much easier to shape around the bridge of the nose. I used materials that I had on hand (i.e., a twisty tie or a piece of wired craft ribbon). If you don’t have either of these items, you might have something else – floral wire, etc. If not, just omit this step – you will still have a face mask that gives you added protection.
- I used 100% quilting cotton for this cute cat face mask. I have made additional masks with soft knit fabric. If you have 100% cotton t-shirts that you can use – that would probably be the softest and most comfortable. 100% cotton material is best to allow for breathability.
Elastic Information
- There are many face masks that utilize elastic – either ¼″ elastic or the small elastic cording. Both of these make great stretchy straps. If you are making a face mask for your own at-home personal use, and you have elastic available, by all means, use your elastic! However, there is not a lot of elastic available to purchase right now so these instructions will give you a different option while maintaining some elasticity in the straps for extra comfort.
- Heads are sized differently thus making these tie straps a great general option. In addition, I have learned that hospitals do not believe that our elastic will withstand sterilization procedures for medical use. This is another important thing to take into consideration when adding your mask straps.
Filter Resources and Information
- There is a pocket or pouch on the inside layer of this face mask. I have ordered a number of filters that can be inserted into this pocket – these PM2.5 filters are still available through my affiliate link, though running low. Here is an interesting article I read on using household materials when N95 masks are not available – other options for filter materials could include dish towels, tshirts, and vacuum filters – consider the breathability of different filter materials, though, and choose depending on how long you think you can breathe through the mask.
Once again, I am not in the medical field; I am not a medical expert. This tutorial, design, and anything made using these instructions is for educational purposes only. I make no warranties, express or implied, that the instructions or products created from these instructions can reduce or eliminate the transmission of any virus, pathogen, or particle. Use of this tutorial for anything other than educational purposes is at your own risk. Please consult a qualified health professional for all medical and pathogen transmission advice.

I love your pattern and have been making for adults but have a request for children sizes. Any idea how long the straps should be and what size I should cut for a child size? Thanks for your help and awesome video/pattern!
girlinspired says
Hi Val! I think about an inch narrower ought to do the trick for school-aged kids. The straps can just be tied off where it’s comfortable – this is one of the reasons I like using straps that tie!
Val says
Thank you! So you would keep the same width or cut an inch off all around? I agree with the straps!

Thank you so much! I tried numerous patterns and they were so uncomfortable. I work as a nurse, and some of the donated one’s are leaving pressure sites on our medical staff. This pattern was perfect!

This video is outstanding. Thank you for doing it. I especially liked that you don’t play any unnecessary music while you’re sewing. Again, excellent!!

Can you provide a pattern for your face mask (no elastic) with pocket? I cannot work from the video and don’t have a computer of my own. (I’m borrowing my son’s to find a pattern with the description given by you.). Thanks-a-million for your your mask. I am confident that it is exactly what I need. I have ITP and Diabetes, no spleem and am required to report to work. My son, also, has a compromised immune system, and I would like to surprise him with a facial mask with pocket, too. We have been unable to find masks in the New Orleans area. Please know that you and your effort to help people like us is greatly appreciated.

IMPORTANT:
DO NOT USE AN INTERFACING WITH GLUE (No iron on) DO NOT USE SPAY ADHESIVES TO HOLD IN PLACE WHILE SEWING.
DO NOT USE ANYTHING THAT THAT WASH AWAY DISSOLUBLE (Might not fully dissolve)
(The reason is none,
THESE HAVE NOT BEEN TESTED FOR THIS USE: absolutely none of these have been test for this use. There could be unforeseen issue with these items when someone breaths through it for hours on end. Actually if smart we would avoid dyed material as well but I don’t see that happening and that is more likely lower risk.
Even when any of these are label safe for humans, even digestible it not the same thing at all. Even digestible item could become a problem is your doing it 8 hours or more a day, day after day, after day.
ALLERGIC REACTIONS: Also any chemical you add into the mix increase the chance of people having allergic reaction to it.
JUST MIGHT NOT BE PLEASANT: Also if nothing else over time with hot breath going in and out these items might develop an order that is unpleasant for the people who have to wear them. Or Adhesive might start reacting to cleaning chemicals or the intense heat while sterilizing.)

How about using quilting batting as a filter? Do you think that would work?
girlinspired says
I think a layer of 100% cotton batting could add an extra layer of protection for sure. I think anything with polyester would make it really hard to breathe through.
Ashley says
Can you please give a text tutorial as well? The video is not appearing on some browsers.
girlinspired says
