While you can’t go wrong with a classic poke cake, this Better Than Sex Cake (otherwise known as BTS Cake) really takes it to a whole new level! A chocolate sheet cake is poked over the top and then doused with caramel and sweetened condensed milk, then topped with whipped cream, toffee pieces, and more caramel! Rich and sweet!
This cake offers a decadent chocolate cake mix base, soaked in caramel sauce and condensed milk and then topped off with whipped cream or Cool Whip, an assortment of chopped candy and chocolate chips, and then an extra drizzle of caramel sauce just for good measure! This Brown Sugar Caramel Sauce would be ideal to make for this cake.

🎂 Ingredients:
- Devil’s Food sheet cake – I use a box cake mix for ease. You will need the cake mix plus any ingredients listed on the box to make the cake. This typically includes 2-3 eggs, vegetable oil, and water. Allow ingredients like eggs to reach room temperature for a smooth cake batter.
- Can of sweetened condensed milk – thick and sweet, this soaks into the cake making a gooey and ultra moist cake base.
- Caramel sauce – Homemade caramel sauce or ice cream topping. I’ve reserved more for the top of the cake.
- Cool Whip – Or frozen whipped topping, thawed. You can also use homemade whipped cream; since the cake itself is so sweet, you may want to skip sweetening the whipped cream.
- Heath bar – Chopped. If you don’t have Heath bars, use another type of toffee candy bar, such as Skor candy bars or even Reese’s peanut butter cups.
- Toffee bits – You can also use chopped toffee candy bars or skip.
- Chocolate chips – these are optional, I think they add some fun texture and make the cake look even more enticing.

Equipment Needed:
No special equipment is really needed for this easy recipe – 9 x 13-inch pan, mixing bowl, hand mixer or stand mixer, wooden spoon, and jug for caramel topping.
Substitutions and Variations
- Use your favorite chocolate cake recipe instead of the box of Devil’s food cake mix. This one-bowl chocolate sheet cake would work perfectly or you can even buy an unfrosted sheet cake from the grocery store.
- Make better than sex cake with pudding instead of the sweetened condensed milk. This would be a great option if you prefer a less “wet” cake.
- Adjust the amount of caramel sauce and/or sweetened condensed milk on the cake. The sauces really saturate the cake, leaving it fairly “wet,” especially at the bottom of the cake. If you prefer, try cutting the condensed milk in half.
- In addition to the Heath bits, top the finished cake with crushed Oreo cookies, chocolate syrup, and chopped nuts.
- I’ve used caramel sauce in this recipe. You can alternately use something like dulce de leche.
- Use different-sized cake pans to make this decadent cake. You may need to adjust the baking time.
🔪 Instructions:
PREP: Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Step 1: Mix the cake mix with the cake ingredients called for in a mixing bowl. Combine until smooth.
Step 2: Pour the batter into a glass baking dish.
Step 3: Once baked, allow the cake to cool for 5 minutes. It should still be slightly warm when the caramel sauce and condensed milk are poured over.
Step 4: With the end of a wooden spoon, poke holes into the baked cake base.
Step 5: Pour the caramel sauce and condensed milk over the poked cake. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes -1 hour to allow the toppings to soak into the cake and firm up. You also want everything completely chilled before adding the whipped cream.
Step 6: Spread the Cool Whip over the cake evenly.
GARNISH AND SERVE: Garnish with chocolate chips, toffee bits, and extra caramel sauce. Serve this decadent dessert with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
- I’ve used a rich chocolate cake mix, but feel free to add your own personal spin by using different cake mix flavors!
- This cake is super easy to make and assembles like a classic chocolate poke cake.
- Make sure that the cake has completely cooled before you add the whipped topping otherwise, you’ll end up with a runny mess.
- Keep this cake PG-rated by calling it Better Than Anything Cake if you’re serving to a younger crowd!
- Using a cake mix saves you from making a chocolate cake from scratch. It’s also a great item to have in the kitchen since it can be used for so many different dessert recipes. Always check the boxed cake mix for the additional ingredients called for.
Recipe FAQs
Refrigerate this cake in an airtight container for up to one week. It’s important that you store it in a closed container (either with a lid or plastic wrap) so that the Cool Whip topping doesn’t absorb any odors from other food in the refrigerator.
You bet! Better Than Sex Cake can be frozen for up to 3 months. You can freeze your fully assembled cake by cutting the cake into individual pieces before freezing it in an airtight container which will make it much easier to enjoy a few pieces at a time instead of having to defrost an entire cake.
You can also freeze the cake base and the whipped topping separately, leaving minimal assembly later on.
To thaw your frozen cake, allow it to defrost in the refrigerator until it’s ready to serve up and enjoy!

Notes
-
- I’ve used a rich chocolate cake mix for this Better Than Sex Cake but feel free to add your own personal spin by using different cake mix flavors!
-
- Make sure that the cake has completely cooled before you add the whipped topping otherwise, you’ll end up with a runny mess.
-
- Keep this cake PG-rated by calling it Better Than Anything Cake if you’re serving to a younger crowd!
-
- Using a cake mix saves you from making a chocolate cake from scratch. However, this chocolate sheet cake is a one-bowl recipe and super easy if you do like a homemade chocolate cake.
- This cake tends to be very “wet” – it’s rich and decadent. If you want to dial it back a little bit, I’d suggest cutting the condensed milk amount in half or substitute vanilla pudding. Pour the caramel sauce over and then add the pudding like we did in our Easter poke cake.

This is the most wonderful Cake.
However, it’s better to use a Plain German Chocolate Cake Mix… Not the Decandant one, Just the basic Mix.
Then do exactally as this recipe states.
