Halloween Dinner Party and House Decor

October 31, 2017 by girlinspired 1 Comment

*This post contains affiliate links.Halloween Dinner Party and House DecorIt’s my favorite time of the year!  When the air turns cool and crisp and we spend more time readying our homes to entertain holiday guests and gather by toasty fires and snuggle under warm layers.  Decorating for Halloween, in particular, has stolen my heart over the last few year.  I just can’t get enough.  Crafting, sewing, preparing fun and delicious foods has filled my October free moments.  So much so, that Halloween has now arrived and I have a slew of photos from our Halloween dinner party and house decor to share – I hope they provide inspiration for future years of spooky good fun!

My prior craft/sewing cubby organizer antique thing has moved out into our living room and holds all kinds of witchy concoctions and supplies.

An outdoor evening dinner party.  I gathered a variety of silver-plated serving platters and chafing dishes and decorated the table with a simple sequin table runner, taper candles, and simple bat-laden tree centerpieces.  This year’s theme was “Gathering of the Witches” and it was lots of fun.  Remember last year’s Murder Mystery Halloween Dinner Party?

Adding hurricanes, candelabras, lights around the trees, and overhead string lights completely transformed the backyard into a beautiful, warm party space.

I found little black twiggy trees in the dollar section at Target and cut a bazillion small bats out of black cardstock using my Cricut Maker machine.  I hot glued the bats all over the branches and popped each tree into a silver-plated coffee/tea pot with a little spanish moss.  Perfect simple, classy, and festive centerpieces.

What do you do when your backyard is in upheaval and you have dirt and dead patches of weeds instead of a lawn for your outdoor party?  You turn it into a graveyard!

Christmas Pillows with Custom Iron-On Designs

December 12, 2016 by girlinspired 4 Comments

Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs.Every year, December gets so busy.  I pile up the crafts that I want to get to and then I spend the whole month running around town checking off a to-do list before I make my things.  I finished my shopping early this year and I’m determined to finish some more of these super fun crafts that have been stacking up.  Over the last couple weeks, I’ve sewn up a fresh set of Christmas pillows and seasonal pillow covers for my living room and front porch.  I’ve made a couple out of buffalo check napkins (so easy!) and some with piping and specialty trims.  And finally, I’ve been creating iron-on designs with my Cricut Explore to really bring out the holiday spirit! My holiday decor is looking fantastic! Whether you have a Cricut Explore or you’re trying to decide if it’s the perfect gift for under the tree (it is!!), I’m going to show you how I made good use of so many beautiful iron-on materials that are available for these machines. Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs. Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs.

Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs. I have cut a lot of things with my Cricut – from fabric and leather, to vinyl, cardstock, and sticker paper, it can cut a whole lot of things.  I haven’t used many of the iron-on materials, but this cold December is just screaming for some glittery red and sparkly black! In between bouts of pouring rain, I spruced up the front porch for Christmas.  I spray painted my typically black bench a nice, glossy red to pop against the black and white paint on the house.  I put a small pre-lit Christmas tree into my front urn and then loaded the porch with pillows and presents.  It’s so cheery!! Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs. Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs. Let’s talk about the “Merry and Bright” pillow first.  You saw how much I’m loving the truck/car with Christmas tree theme last week when I made those cheery miniature snow scenes in all my apothecary jars and cake stands! This week, I needed the truck with tree on a pillow.  The front cover of the pillow is just a simple white cotton duck material from Hobby Lobby.  It’s thick and inexpensive and works well as a background for some custom iron-on designs.  I worked in Cricut Design Space™ to combine a vintage looking truck (search “vintage truck”) and a Christmas tree.  I over-layed the two images and tilted the tree until it was positioned as if it were being taken home in the bed of the truck.  I resized the two images to form an image about 13″ wide and since the tree and truck pieces would be cut on separate sheets of iron-on – I was able to cut everything on the 12″x12″ mat. I also adjusted the colors of each truck part so that I would have a better sense of how the finished product would look.  I “synced” the text and the truck layers so that they would cut on the same mat.Screenshot of iron-on design process using Cricut design software. I “synced” the text and the truck layers so that they would cut on the same mat.  Below is how the preview for the red iron-on layer looks.  Please note that it is VERY IMPORTANT to check the “mirror image (for iron-on)” box in each layers preview menu before you begin cutting.Screenshot of iron-on design process using Cricut design software. Use the Cricut to cut iron-on material for awesome Christmas pillow designs! Here are my pieces after cutting them out from the variety of foil iron-on, matte iron-on, and glitter iron-on colors I chose.  (Be sure that you use a fresh Cricut blade and follow the cutting guide instructions for EACH of the materials you use).  Pick the negative material away from the design, leaving the pieces you’ll be using intact on the the protective film.  Do a “dry-fit” to make sure you like the colors and shapes together. Use the Cricut to cut iron-on material for awesome Christmas pillow designs! Once you have all your pieces ready to go, lay them onto your single layer of pillow cover fabric (I used a 19″ x 19″ square for this pillow).  You will iron on from the bottom layer up.  Set them out to plan your ironing order.  Another IMPORTANT thing to remember is that you cannot iron on any materials OVER the glitter iron-on.  It will look like it’s layering on fine, but when you remove the protective film, the material will show the shape of the glitter film below it and it also won’t adhere permanently in these places.  Cut away (the tree bottom, in this case) any background glitter material before ironing it down. Use the Cricut to cut iron-on material for awesome Christmas pillow designs! Now, start with that bottom layer and follow the package instructions to iron down the tree.  If you have an Easy-Press, follow the instructions for your type of material for use with the Easy-Press.  Wait for it to cool completely, then gently peel off the protective film and admire your work! Use the Cricut to cut iron-on material for awesome Christmas pillow designs! Continue ironing each layer on until you’ve completed your image!  Then, go ahead and sew your pillow cover together and fluff the pillow inside.  If you need help sewing the pillow, you can check out the detailed instructions in this decorative trims pillow post or this basic pillow post. Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs. Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs. Now, on to the “Naughty or Nice” pillow.  This one was SUPER fun to make and quick, too.  Since there wasn’t a pre-set design available for this iron-on in the Cricut design space, I created the custom text in Adobe Photoshop. It is SO easy to upload your own designs into the cutting software.  You simply click the “upload image” button instead of Insert Image.  Upload the .jpg file. Then, tell the software what kind of image you’ve uploaded.  Mine was “simple.” After you click continue, you will tell the software which part of the image it’s going to cut out by clicking away the negative space (this text required a click on the main outer area, and then a click inside the enclosed bubbles of “g” “e” and “a” to tell the software to cut those spaces.  See how the areas that have been clicked turn a transparent-like bluish?  You can see how I haven’t clicked away the inside of the “e”, etc.  Do that next, then hit continue. Then, the software will ask you if you want to save as a Print&Cut file or just a Cut file.  This is a super cool option if you wanted to print out the text or a patterned image using your printer first, and then have the Cricut cut around it.  In this case, I was cutting my text from the shimmery black iron-on material, so I just saved it as a cut file. Now, you insert it into your design spread and proceed with sizing it for your pillow cover and cutting it out.  I wanted to do a long 15″x25″ pillow, so I had to turn the text sideways and cut it on the 12″x24″ mat.  That used my full sheet of iron-on material, but the resulting pillow is fantastic, so it was worth it! Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs.

Create these festive and beautiful Christmas pillows with custom iron-on designs. Here’s how the pillow was lookin’ in my family room until I moved it to the porch.  I’ll take this opportunity to tell you that the pillow you’re viewing here has been through the wash machine four times + had bleach applied to the white portions, since my very sweet little puppy took a liking to the pillow as well.  Within hours of finishing it and setting it on the couch, I found the dog tumbling with it out in the mud.  So!  Besides re-assigning it to the unreachable front porch, I had to wash and rewash this baby and I’m happy to report that the iron-on material has held up every bit as good as new! Holiday Home Tour 2015

Christmas Holiday Home Tour - lots of lovely vignettes!

Christmas week is here!  This holiday season has been interesting for our family – mixed with feelings of nostalgia and missing our old home while also loving new festivities and traditions in our new community.  We strung Christmas lights on the house for the first time in ten years and I am enjoying finding new places for all of the Christmas decorations that I’ve made and collected over the years.  I still have a lengthy list of to-dos, most of which I know I won’t get to, but today I’m taking a minute to share some holiday home tour photos with you before the holiday has passed!  I don’t think I’ve shared any house progress pictures with you since my home introduction post (aka – the before pictures) a while back, so you’ll get a sneak peak at a few of the projects that we’ve tackled.

We have two separate entertainment/gathering areas in this home and so I decided to decorate the areas differently, according to style/color scheme.  In our family room/kitchen, we have a festive and casual red and green theme going on.  The kitchen table holds a cute little gathering of tiny presents, a cake stand with a crafty house, and bowls of red pinecones and ornaments.  I filled my little secretary desk with all of my wrapping supplies and added a wire basket to hold the rolls of wrapping paper.  I love wrapping supplies so much; it makes me happy to have a nice little collection on display.

I sewed together a couplet pairs of buffalo check napkins for quick couch throw pillows and we’ve been enjoying the coziness from the plaid flannel fringe blankets that I sewed in the Fall.  For quick decorating, I simply fill glass bowls and hurricanes with ornaments.  They catch a lot of light and add sparkle and color to the rooms.

Christmas Holiday Home TourWe did pick out a nice, pretty Noble Fir tree for this room since we spend so much time in here.  Unfortunately, it was completely crisp and turning brown two weeks into the season, so I had to transfer the ornaments over to the little artificial tree that we keep in our room for glow.  It suits the space fine and gives me a nice spot to put all the presents wrapped in buffalo check plaid!  😉 I typically have just one tree and I fill it with a big conglomeration of ornaments from mine and my husband’s childhood and all through our married lives.  There are ornaments the kids made and those from places where we’ve traveled.  Decorating the tree is one of our favorite family traditions as we tell stories about where various ornaments came from.  Also, I hung our rustic pinecone wreath over the fireplace – still waiting for nails in the brick to hang stockings.  I definitely miss our old fireplace – which was a wood stove disguised as a fireplace – and mantle that my husband built.  We’ll get there eventually.

I am still completely smitten with the fur and flannel stockings that I made last year.  DO get the tutorial and make a few for yourself if you haven’t already.  They’re perfect for hanging on a console table or other piece of furniture, if not on the mantle.  I stuff the stockings with some sparkly fluff and they look so cozy!  This is our other main living space – it’s the formal living room and dining room.

This room is coming along.  It does currently have a pretty large pile of wood flooring sitting in the middle of it, but I kindly photographed around that because…underneath the pile of wood is….WOOD FLOORS and a room that is feeling more like home!  We’ve installed the floors in this whole room, so that’s a big accomplishment.  We still have the kitchen, family room, and entryway to do.  The console table in here is a nice place to arrange seasonal decor and I set up some sparkly lights and a Christmas village.  There’s plenty of room for the village to grow.  I started with the Winter Village I crafted last year and added a few finished pieces I found at Jo-Ann this year.

Opposite the little seating area in the living room, we purchased an artificial tree to fill a front window.  When one goes from living in the country for ten years to living in a neighborhood full of Christmas displays, they get super excited to put a tree in the front window!!  We decided on a flocked tree and it sets the stage for a white and metallic theme in this whole room.  You can also catch a glimpse of the piano my husband got for me for my birthday this year.  I have a few more paper and wax village items on the top of the piano and some gorgeous gold lanterns nearby (Jo-Ann).

I have a pretty healthy supply of ornaments, but not nearly enough to cover two trees.  I was able to decorate this tree with just a few carefully placed ornaments.  I placed some inexpensive silver, gold, and champagne bulbs around the tree and added a few metallic colored or clear glass ornaments from my regular collection.  Then I picked up just a few clusters of pinecones, birds, and shimmery florals from the floral department at the craft store.  These all come on little sticks and they slide into the tree branches just perfectly.  It adds some color and visual interest to the tree without a lot of expense.

Coming over to the dining room, we have my favorite space in the house right now.  With the help of my cousin, we installed wallpaper on the accent wall across from the entry.  It’s a quirky circus animal-like pattern in black and white and I am in love with it!!  It’s the perfect backdrop for my mirrored buffet and all the formal sparkle in this room.  I’m still figuring out a dining room table, but we have a makeshift little dining setup for now and it’s working out great!  I kept some of my Thanksgiving decor on the table and added silver balls and “fairy lights” to this apothecary jar for a centerpiece – I really loved the mason jar luminaries from Thanksgiving and wanted to extend their use through the Christmas season.

Well, that’s it for the holiday home tour this year! I’m looking forward to seeing how the spaces transform over the years and the decorating along with them!

Dinner Party Hot Cocoa Bar

March 6, 2013 by girlinspired 10 Comments

Hot Cocoa Bars have been popping up everywhere and I just had to get one in my own house.  I guess I really like a whole bunch of choices with no restrictions or limitations…and a whole array of choices revolving around chocolate is just as good as it gets, in my opinion.  A dinner party was the perfect time to set up a hot cocoa bar here.  Not because my girlfriends weren’t too full after appetizers, dinner, and cake (because they were), but it’s less weird than if I staged the whole thing for myself on a rainy day.  I needed a dessert bar for the dinner party that I could mostly prepare ahead of time and that would be quick to set up after dinner while still being part of the conversation with my friends.

I staged the hot cocoa bar over on the sidetable and secretary desk in my family room.  (This is also where I staged the dessert bar for Olivia’s slumber party and the same desk that I used as a prop for the baby shower last fall.)  You know how I like to make good use of the antiques I drag home so that my husband sees how fruitful (and necessary) thrifting and antiquing is.
Since my girlfriends usually incorporate a theme/holiday into their decorating for our dinner parties, I considered that March brings St. Patrick’s day.  And even though emerald green is the Pantone color of the year, it’s not my favorite.  Instead, I incorporated some gold and yellow accents into the decor and I think it looks festive, classy, and very spring!
I used a mixture of apothecary jars, glass cups/bowls, and white ceramic to hold the food staples for the spread.  And a quick trip to my local Goodwill store yielded a pile of white tea cups for drinking – score!!
I was able to set up the glassware with sprinkles, mini marshmallows, mini chocolate chips, gold-wrapped chocolate, and vanilla syrup in the days ahead of the party (I kept them kidtight airtight with plastic wrap).  The salted caramel was made ahead and kept in the fridge in a heatproof glass container so I only had to pop it in the microwave for a couple minutes just before hot cocoa time.  I also set out the hot chocolate spoons just before the party (more on that in a bit).  At dessert time, I needed only to heat the milk on the stovetop and warm the caramel and we were ready!
Since our dinner party also doubled as a birthday party, I made a yummy cake with quick, but beautiful swirled rose frosting.  Again, I needed something doable to decorate the day of the party, while also preparing dinner and cleaning the house!  I’m going to put up a separate post on the cake, so we’ll talk more about that then!  I also included a pitcher for cold milk and set out my adorable glass bottles and stripey straws that I purchased from Shop Sweet Lulu (have I mentioned before how much I LOVE THAT SHOP!!)  I don’t dare use those bottles for my little girls’ birthday parties, so I was thrilled to set them out here – I think they totally add to the decor, too!  And then I wrote up a cute menu on my chalkboard sign for fun!  I had to erase “chocolate mint” right before the party because those hot chocolate spoons were a fail (more on that below), SO I substituted “non-fat and sugar-free” on that line for the party – heeheehee!
Alright, now about the actual chocolate for the hot chocolate….I fell in love with the idea of hot chocolate on a stick when I met face to face with a Ticket Hot Chocolate on a Stick at Alt Summit.  I love how easy it is to serve one or serve 50 without needing a big jug of messy powder.  I found a recipe for DIY hot chocolate on a stick on the Ticket Chocolate blog, and I was thrilled!  I had mixed results getting the chocolate right, though, and I’m going to share more details on this in a separate post, so stay tuned!!
There is a TON of beautiful and clever inspiration for Hot Cocoa Bars on the web.  So many possibilities!  And really….a rainy day would be okay to set one up in your own house just for yourself.  I’m not gonna lie, I totally left mine up and have been indulging regularly.  🙂  The kids like it too, but that’s a no brainer!!  Here are some great posts that might further spark your motivation to set up a hot cocoa bar of your own:

Our Christmas House

December 24, 2012 by girlinspired 11 Comments

The whirlwind of Christmas preparations are winding down.  The shopping is done, the goodies will continue to be baked and consumed at a steady pace.  I just finished my last handmade gift and most of the wrapping is done.  We’re watching Christmas movies and listening to all the Christmas songs and even though it’s rainy and windy and miserable outside, we finally have a toasty fire going to keep us cozy and warm.
Before I sign off for a few days, I wanted to wish each of you a peaceful and joyous holiday filled with love.
And some last minute Christmas decoration pictures, since I hadn’t gotten around to sharing them, and it’s now or never!

Mostly, I just decorate downstairs since that is where we spend the bulk of our time.  The girls have a tree and nativity scene in their room and I put up a little vignette with some lights in my room, mostly so that I can fall asleep to twinkly lights.  Our living/family room and kitchen are all one big open space and it makes it fun to have all the decorating flow across the living area (an amongst the sea of toys that typically adorn the floor).  Graham came home from Home Depot on black Friday with 12 poinsettias, so we have an abundance of red this year!!  You can also get some glimpses of my reupholstered couch which still isn’t totally finished – New Year’s resolution in the making!  I found out that I had to return to placing all bagged gifts up on the cabinets and furniture again this year, not because the girls won’t stay out of them, but those darned cats kept climbing in them, chewing on them, and shredding the tissue paper!

Alrighty!  I’m off to make some more caramel corn and see what fun Christmas movies are on tonight!  Have a wonderful week!

Evergreen Wreath DIY

December 12, 2012 by girlinspired 10 Comments

I finally tackled a project that I’ve been wanting to try for a couple years.  Making my own evergreen wreath.  Wreaths are just so beautiful and festive for the holiday season and I really like the freshness of an evergreen wreath over my mantle.  Last year, I didn’t have the time to try to figure out a wreath and I purchased a relatively inexpensive one from Costco.  After Christmas, I examined the wreath frame and was able to disassemble it.  I preserved the wire wreath frame and the pre-wired pinecone clusters and fake berries.  Using the clippings off the bottom of our Christmas tree, I put together a fresh wreath for this year in no time (with a four-year-old helper, no less!)  It’s a cinch.  Let’s get started!!
This wreath form is really simple because you just pinch down the wires to hold your branches.  You can also use a regular wire form and just wrap your branch clusters with wire.  All of these materials are available at nearly any craft store.  I used three sets of pinecones and berries and each pinecone cluster had three pinecones.  My horticulturist mother taught me that plants always look good in groups of three – apparently, that applies even on wreaths!  If you collect your pinecones from the yard, just wrap some wire around their centers to secure them in clusters and onto the wreath form.
With your gardening clippers, cut three small twigs off of your branches.  Mine were about 6-9 inches long.
Stack your three twigs on top of one another, fluffiest at the bottom.
Place the bundle onto the wreath form with the base under the wreath “clip” and base pointed to the right.  You’re going to work in a counter-clockwise direction.
Bend down the wire “clips.” If your wreath form doesn’t have the clips, wrap wire here instead.
Gather another bundle of branches and place it into the next “clip” section on the wreath form.  Make sure that the tops of your second bundle cover the base/wires of the first bundle.  Continue adding evergreen bundles in a counter-clockwise direction.
If you are adding pinecone/berry decorative elements:  Count the number of wire clips on your wreath form – I have twelve.  Divide by the number of decorative groupings you have – I have three (I grouped one berry and one pinecone group for each decorative grouping.  Okay, so twelve divided by three equals four – I’m going to add in a decorative group right with my evergreen bundle every fourth clip – the first grouping is shown above, clipped into the fourth wire “clip.”
Continue around until you get to your last “clip.”  Simply lift the tops of your first bundle that are covering the final clip.  Collect your last bundle of evergreens (and decorative elements) and slide them into that last clip.  Lay the tops of your first bundle over the base of that last bundle and you’re done!!
Hold up your wreath and make sure all the branches look even – add to any sparse spaces.  Attach a ribbon or wire to hang the wreath and put that beauty up!  You can easily adjust the fullness of the wreath by increasing the number of branches in each bundle.
