Frozen Inspired Snowflake Cake

March 5, 2015 by girlinspired 4 Comments

Frozen Inspired Snowflake Cake Looking for an easy to make Frozen inspired cake with that will impress? A little while back I tried to create snowflakes that I could put on top of cakes and cupcakes – I printed some simple designs out on the computer and then piped them onto parchment paper using royal icing with the designs underneath – like tracing paper.  It was a disaster.  The snowflakes piped out great and looked nice, but as soon as I tried to peel them up, they broke into a million pieces.  Even with thicker piped lines, I couldn’t get good results.  Then, I came across these super cool snowflake punches for fondant.  They were inexpensive so I decided to give them a try.

I used the Decorator Preferred Fondant from Wilton that is easy to get from Jo-Ann – it’s super convenient to use pre-made fondant and this kind is easy to work with.  Dust your work surface with cornstarch, then roll out a piece of the fondant to about 1/8″ thick.  Dust the snowflake punch with cornstarch also so that it doesn’t stick.  Because these punches are plastic, I found that they didn’t slice off the shape as smoothly as maybe a metal cutter would.  However, if I wiggled the punch back and forth in the fondant, then I was able to get a fairly clean punch.  I found it easiest to lift the snowflake up and out of its spot, then press the punch down onto a clean area of the counter.  When you press the lever on the top of the punch, it indents the additional details into the snowflake and also pushes the snowflake out of the cutter.  There are three different sizes and I made quite a pile of variety.  The snowflakes can dry on wax or parchment paper until hard or you can use them while they’re still soft.

Now, what in the world could a house full of little girls possibly do with a pile of fondant snowflakes?  Make a Frozen inspired snowflake cake, of course.  I tinted some buttercream with two shades of blue food coloring – Americolor #160 Electric Blue and Americolor #128 Turquoise.  Just a dot of each for a nice, pretty pastel aqua.

After layering on the snowflakes in a random pattern, I made a fondant beaded border from this cool silicone fondant mold made by Wilton.  This mold couldn’t be easier to use – squish the fondant in, scrape off the excess from the top, pull the beaded border out.  The border needs to be used while soft so that you can curve it around the shape of the cake.  If you’ve ever cursed over imperfectly piped beaded borders, you’ll love this mold!

So there you have it!  Gorgeous cake decorations that anyone can do because it’s all about the tools!  Have fun!!

Frozen Party Favor Necklaces

Frozen Party Favor Necklaces - DIY

I could not be more in love with these Frozen party favor necklaces that I made for the goodie bags for our recent birthday party!  I was inspired to make a pile of them from these Anthropologie Party Animal Necklaces by Bev at Flamingo Toes and these Pretty Ponies Necklaces by Melissa at Polkadot Chair.  Once I saw their necklaces, I knew I had to have some in my life.  I came across a box of “Arctic Animals” and knew they’d be perfect for a Frozen-themed party.

Making the necklaces are more of a creative process than a difficult task and you can really gear them toward any style you want.  I knew glitter and sparkles would go over well with my crowd so I used a combination of glitter (added with Mod Podge), tulle (gathered into little tutus or capes), metallic pipe cleaners, ribbon, silver Stickles (essentially glitter glue) and silver beads (strung onto elastic string that can be found in jewelry section of your craft store).  I also found an envelope of cabochon flowers in my craft stash (from Pick Your Plum) that I ended up gluing onto ALL the animals.

After “dressing up” the animals, it’s simply a matter of adding a screw eye and ball chain to turn them into necklaces.  You can probably find these supplies at your craft store, but I ordered mine off of Amazon – if you’d like to order the same ones I did, I’ll include affiliate links here:  set of 25 ball chain aluminum necklaces  (I thought the price was great and I needed a lot!) and 100 silver screw eye pins in the correct size to fit the necklace chains.  You can also find the Arctic Animal sets here.  I used mini tubes of E6000 to glue the screw pins in and hold the cabochon flowers on.  I like these mini tubes because I find that my big tubes of glue dry up and get gloppy long before I can use them up.  For specific step-by-step instructions on attaching the jewelry hardware, you can visit one of the inspiration tutorials that I listed above – they both have great instructions that are easy to follow.  Be sure that you weight the animal between your fingers before poking the hole to add the screw pin so that the animal is balanced once it’s added to the chain – I hope that makes sense – you just don’t want to place the pin too far forward or back so that the animal doesn’t hang level.

How much do you love these??  I was pretty attached to them after working on them for a day.  It was almost hard giving them away!  What if the party kids didn’t love them as much as I did???  It’s okay, though, I DID wrap them up and part ways.  But I kept two for myself.  Want to guess which ones?  Which one is your favorite?

Frozen Birthday Party Cupcake Toppers

Frozen Birthday Party Cupcake Toppers - simple and lovely!

It should come as no surprise to you that, after deciding she wanted an ice skating birthday party, Grace also requested a Frozen theme.  Because the party was at an ice skating rink, there weren’t a ton of opportunities for crafting and decorating, but I squeezed a few in anyhow!  This first project is fairly quick and simple and only requires a handful of supplies.  I used my Cricut Explore to cut out a pile of snowflakes from a glittery silver cardstock.  This took some time for the machine to cut out the intricate design, and it also required a fresh blade in the machine, but after patiently waiting, I had a gorgeous little pile of shimmery snowflakes.  I used them to create these Frozen birthday party cupcake toppers and party bags!

Frozen Birthday Party Cupcake Toppers - simple and lovely!

For the cupcake toppers, I hot glued a larger snowflake to the top of a toothpick and then glued a jeweled flower (in Frozen colored perfection) in the center of the snowflake.  These looked so great in the mini chocolate cream pies and were a cinch to assemble.  I carried them to the party in a Ziploc and stuck them into the pies after piping on the whipped cream.  Easy Peasy!

Perfect and easy party favor bags for Frozen Birthday Party!

With the smaller set of snowflakes, I created some pretty clothespin clips to top off the party favor bags.  A quick dab of hot glue onto the blue clothespins and they were ready to go.  I also cut a set of labels with the Cricut while it was out and wrote up the guests’ names with a silver Sharpie.  Fast projects that make a big impact are hard to pass up!  If you don’t have a cutting machine like the Cricut, check your local craft or scrapbooking store for pre-cut snowflakes and labels – I’m SURE you can find something that will work perfectly!  Have fun!

Elsa Dress Tutorial

June 25, 2014 by girlinspired 58 Comments

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

I am really excited to share this sewing tutorial with you.  If there is one thing that Addie requested for her Frozen in Summer birthday party, it was for sure an Elsa Dress.  (of course!)  I struggled with how to make a dress in true Elsa spirit, but that would also be appropriate for a summer pool party!  After some playing around, I came up with a kid-approved success – a strapless, knit dress with a circle skirt and attached cape.

This little Elsa was quite pleased with the result.  I have put together an Elsa Dress Tutorial at the request of my ever-encouraging social media friends.  Since I wasn’t quite sure what I was doing, I probably didn’t take all the little steps along the way that I normally would, but I hope you are able to take these basics and create this dress for your own Frozen fan!  This is a quick sew, too; you should be able to finish it in 1-2 hours.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

I purchased this ribbed, shimmery knit from Jo-Ann – probably in the costume section.  It’s a different sort of fabric and feels almost papery, but it surprisingly wasn’t itchy on Addison, so there’s that.  The netting that I used was snatched from a fabric by the pound bin at Michael Levine’s Loft in L.A. last year.  You could use tulle, but I think you’ll probably want to search for something with more drape, like a chiffon.

Supplies:

1.5 yards of stretchy knit for main dress
1 yard of netting for cape
silver metallic ric rac (2 packages)
3/8″ lightweight clear elastic

Instructions:

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

1. Begin by cutting two pieces for the bodice – one front and one back.  The width of each piece should equal 1/2 chest measurement – 1/2 inch.  My working measurement was 22″ so I cut each piece 10.5″ wide.  The length of each piece should be from about the underarm to the high waist – mine was 5″.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

2. Mark the center of the front piece at the top.  Stitch from the top center about 2/3 of the way down using a long gathering stitch.  Pull the bobbin threads from the top and bottom to create the ruching effect for the front bodice.  You’ll want to pull them enough to create a defined gathering, but not so much that the length of the bodice changes dramatically.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

3.  Sew directly over the top of your gathered portion using a regular stitch.  Backstitch well at the beginning and end of the section (also consider stitching over the entire section twice for reinforcement.)  Please note:  You are going to attach clear elastic around the top of the bodice and then turn it under and hem – do not gather the very top 1/2″ for easier hemming.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

4.  Place the front and back bodice pieces right sides together and sew together the side seams – you can use a serger if you have one; otherwise, use a stretch stitch or a narrow zig zag stitch.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

5.  Use a zig zag stitch to attach clear elastic all the way around the top of the bodice.  Stitch the elastic onto the wrong side and align it with the top edge of the bodice.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

6.  Turn the raw edge and elastic toward the wrong side of the bodice top and stitch in place.  It is important to use a stretch stitch or a narrow zig zag stitch here to ensure stretchability in the finished garment for dressing.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

7.  Use a zig zag stitch to attach clear elastic around the entire bottom of the bodice (sew onto the wrong side of the fabric).

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

8.  The key to creating a flowing Elsa dress is to use a circle skirt for the bottom half of the dress.  Cut out your circle skirt based on the length from the high waist to the floor (or desired bottom of dress – I didn’t hem mine).  The waist hole for the skirt should be the same perimeter as the bottom of the bodice.  So…my perimeter was 21″ and I can use math to figure out that the radius for cutting my waist is [21″] divided by 6.28= [3.34].  Or the radius equals the perimeter divided by 2, then divided by pi (3.14).  Cut out your circle skirt – this tutorial may be helpful if you need help with making a circle skirt pattern.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

9.  The above picture shows how the finished bodice piece will attach to the waist opening in the circle skirt.  Join the raw edge of the bottom of the bodice piece to the raw edge of the waist opening, right sides together.  Serge or sew using a stretch stitch.  Now the main part of the dress is done.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

10.  If you’d like to attach a “cape”, you will need to cut a piece of netting equal to the length you desire – measure from the underarm to the floor and cut from selvage edge to selvage edge. You can curve the two bottom corners of the netting – see this tutorial for help on that concept.  Attach ric rac along all edges except for the top edge.  I simply stitched the ric rac on the top side of the netting.  If you think that your fabric might fray, you will need to serge or hem the edge of the fabric before attaching the ric rac.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

11.  Sew a long gathering stitch all the way across the top of the netting piece and gather until it is the same width as the back bodice.  Lay the dress out in front of you with the back bodice right side up.  Pin the gathered netting right side down along the top edge of the back bodice (you are not matching edges here and it will feel a little awkward, but it makes this really easy).  Use a stretch or zigzag stitch to securely attach the netting to the back bodice.

Elsa Dress Sewing Tutorial - this is a quick and easy sew!

12.  When you have finished stitching and you flip the netting down, you will see your raw edge folded under and the dress is complete!

Now that the dress is done, you can add a few accessories if you like to complete the look.  We picked up a really cheap crown from Hobby Lobby or you could make your own crown from lace.  I also sprayed her hair with a white shimmer hair color from the beauty supply store.  It was kind of nasty, but she totally loved it – was mostly faded by the time we got to the pool and then of course it washed out as soon as she started playing in the water, but it was fun for a couple pictures!!  I picked up a pair of white gloves from Toys ‘R’ Us for a few bucks which she loved every moment of the three days leading up to her party and was then tired of them.  Overall, the dress held up great.  It stays up quite well, considering it’s strapless on a little girl and has the weight of the cape on the back – she pulled it up from time to time, but that clear elastic really holds it together!
