Today’s the day that I finally get to reveal the girls’ bedroom makeover that I’ve been working on for several months. You may remember my inspiration picture and the color palette that I was leaning toward in this “Paint Plans” teaser post back in July. I am so excited to show you how well the Glidden® paint ‘My Image Inspiration’ Tool worked because I could not be more happy with how the bedroom turned out!! As I mentioned before, we decided to make over one of the bedrooms while transitioning the younger girls back into a room where they could have bunk beds set up. The paint in the room was getting dingy and weathered and I was fixated on transforming it into a bright, cheery space with a vintage candy shoppe feel.
This is what the bedroom looked like before we started the project. It was functioning as the kids’ playroom. I always thought of the walls as neutral and light, but once we started painting, I realized how much brighter the room could be.
We began the project by painting the walls and ceiling with Glidden Interior Eggshell paint in ‘Marshmallow White.’ The paint was yummy thick and we used three coats of paint to really cover all of the paint underneath. I cut in along the baseboards, around the door frames, and into the corners, while Graham painted with the roller right after me. This worked really well to prevent any of the lines that sometimes occur when an area of paint dries before joining it with another area. Next, I tackled a project that I’ve been wanting to do for years: wainscoting!! For this accent wall, we installed a flat wall surface with molding shaped into boxes (I’ll get into those details another time.) We painted the entire accent wall, the base molding, and new crown molding also in ‘Marshmallow White,’ except that we used Semi-Gloss in contrast to the Eggshell we used in the rest of the room.
After the Marshmallow White was done, we let the room dry for a day and then we started taping up the stripes for the walls. I’m going to share more details on this another time too, so do stop back in! Taping the stripes takes a lot of patience, but the results are so worth it! We used Glidden Interior Eggshell in ‘Glistening Moonlight’ for the stripes. After two coats, I peeled back a few strips of tape to check the color contrast. I didn’t feel like there was enough contrast, so I went back into Home Depot to figure out what to do. Because Glidden has a simplified selection of colors, I knew I wanted to stick with the ‘Glistening Moonlight’ color that the Glidden Color Tool had indicated. Instead of randomly selecting another shade of blue, I asked the paint counter to increase the saturation of the paint. They increased the color by 100% and after painting two new coats of blue onto the striped wall, it was perfect. Better than I could have imagined!
The room took a lot of work, but it’s probably my favorite painting job that I’ve ever done (and we’ve painted a lot of walls). It’s also the first time that I’ve used any sort of method or inspiration picture to choose my paint colors. And although I had to take the blue back into the store for added saturation, it really did turn out to be the perfect color for the look I was trying to achieve. Ready for some finished room pictures?
I used some of the leftover ‘Glistening Moonlight’ paint to create a couple pieces of canvas art for the room. Love how they turned out!
I also purchased Glidden Satin paint in ‘Pink Ballet Slipper’ (which was another color from my original palette provided by the Glidden ‘My Image Inspiration’ Tool). I used the pink paint to transform a yellowed white desk into a perfectly coordinating accent piece in the room. Doesn’t it look like perfection? The mirror on the dresser is also painted ‘Pink Ballet Slipper.’
We’re still tweaking the room a little bit, but I am so excited to have created this beautiful space for the girls. Who wouldn’t want to retreat to this Vintage Candy Shoppe bedroom??
I am so grateful to Glidden paint for providing me this opportunity to tackle such a large project and also for providing the tools to make the paint color selection easy and successful!

Beautiful work! And such a unique theme for a bedroom. I remember now, so long ago, when you shared the color palette for the new room. I was shocked after you had worked to make such a great room for the girls together with their matching quilts! Are the quilts on the beds still??? The stripes are perfection and the wainscoting is an easy job. We did not use a backer board (sounds like you did?) but simply put the moulding pieces up on the wall (in our dining room). If the wall is smooth enough no one will know the difference! Love your work and photos!

Gorgeous! I’m too scared to do stripes. I’d like to paint our office. It’s just a dull yellow.

What a sweet little room! I love it. I would have loved it even more when I was a little girl. I would love to paint my bathroom. We have been slowly making our way through our house (paint wise) and I was just thinking this morning how lovely it would be to paint our bathroom.

I lvoe the room – beautiful, delicate, and so fresh. I want to tackle my front living room – It is the room I meet with potential brides, the room I try to keep clean in a kid infested house, the room I retreat to on those occasional days I have a moment to sip tea and glance at a book or magazine. It is currently tan (which worked when we had a cream sofa), but we inherited a beautiful dark brown sofa from my mom when she moved this summer and now the room is too dark. I want to paint it a gorgeous pale robin’s egg blue with a grey undertone and a hint of teal – I may even try to do a stencil on one wall to draw focus… oh how I would love to paint that room!!!
Melissa says
Beautiful! I think my guest bathroom is going to be next up for some new paint.

Beautiful! If I wasn’t knee deep in not one but 2 bathroom remodels (yes pure crazy up in here) I would be re-doing Abbey’s room with these colors! They are so lovely and soft. I love how playful the room is as well.

I love it! I seriously envy your girls.
I actually just spent my morning painting (part) of my living room! The baby wanted to eat the paint which made things a little difficult at times. I’d really love to finish painting the living room & then work on the hallway.

What a unique idea for a kid’s room! I never would have thought of that idea, but it turned out so lovely. I love the striped walls! I definitely would love to paint my bedroom again… or I’ll be moving out within the year (I’m getting married next year) so really any room in our future home! 🙂

OH WOW! I hope you’re still patting yourself on the back for a job well done- I mean A-M-A-Z-ING. Having a family, life, home, etc. and still making the effort to do 120% is nothing short of inspiring commitment. We bought our first home in November of last year. I have yet to commit to “doing” anything with the baby’s room. She will be two in October, so I have kind of been waiting for her blossoming personality to inspire me. When I started planning her carnival theme party, the ideas wouldn’t stop. Of course, ideas and money do not always agree; therefore, there will be careful planning:D. Again, great job!

My goodness, Stef, this is amazing! I’m totally in awe, and totally inspired! My Ella’s room used to have a woodland fairy theme, but when we moved her up into her big sister’s old room ( went away to college!) she loved the dark blue of Julia’s walls. After being in here for a year, we realize it’s truly too dark for my bright sunny artist, so it’s back to the drawing board. This time, with ammunition! I’m going to try that tool to see what we come up with! Thank you so much for sharing!

I love what you did with the whole vintage candy shop idea. The stripes are amazing. I’m sure your girls are loving that room. My daughter wants a polar bear themed room with murals and all, aargh! Don’t know how I am going to do this without going overboard. Thanks for the inspiration!

oh my, I love the muted tones in here, but still fun and interesting. I need to paint my kitchen-i’m no longer loving the green, and want to do a more grey/brown.

Within the last year, we have repainted nearly every room in the house…except the master bedroom because we could not decide (or agree) on a color that we would both want to live with every single day. I change my bedspread often, so I am afraid of picking a wall color that would limit my options for bedspreads. Basically, I am too indecisive and I don’t know if I will ever settle on a color…so either my walls will remain white, or I will begin changing the wall color as often as I change my bedspread.

The room turned out adorably! I love everything, especially the blue stripes! I’m hoping to paint our guest room soon. We moved into our house last year, and we painted everything except in there!

My next room for painting/first room in the house for painting… The master bedroom. Or the master bath. Maybe both, but not the same color. Or should they be the same color? I’m sort of paralyzed with self-doubt.

I think the question is what room wouldn’t I like to paint in my house. I have been “painting” my kids bedroom for the last 6 years. 2 walls are red and the other 2 walls were suppose to be black (I have boys) but they are still an off white. I suppose I would start there. I would also love to repaint my kitchen and my living room.
