Glitter Easter Egg Decorations DIY

March 28, 2014 by girlinspired 41 Comments

Make GORGEOUS Easter eggs with this DIY tutorial for glitter Easter egg decorations. Use naturally colored eggs from your backyard chickens or dye your regular white eggs – either way, this glitter activity is the perfect springtime craft for kids and adults alike! Decorating Easter Eggs is one of the absolute most fun and nostalgic holiday traditions – it’s even possible that my love of crafting stemmed from learning how to dye Easter eggs from the time I was a bitty.  I hope you love this glitter craft as much as I did.

OH yeah.  My dutiful hens have been giving us quite the overflow of beautifully colored eggs.  I’m talking close to 5 dozen eggs a week – I can’t hand them out fast enough.  I keep looking at the variety of amazing colors and wanted a way to incorporate them into some spring/Easter decor.  Have you ever blown out eggs before?  I’m definitely not an expert, and it’s not the quickest activity without some sort of fancy tool, but it is kind of fun.  I blew out a pile of eggs and then went for a metallic dipping effect and the eggs turned out SOOOO pretty.  Would you like to make some glitter Easter eggs?

To blow out the inside, you will need to poke a hole in each end and then blow air into the egg. This one-hole egg blowing pump tool (affil) looks like it would make the task super easy. This “Crack Me Easter Egg tutorial” has a description on how to blow out eggs.

Once the eggs are cleaned and dry, it’s time to add the glitter.

Put white glue or Mod Podge into a small bowl – the glue can be thinned down with some water.  Dip the eggs into the glue mixture and blot excess drips.  Sprinkle with glitter.  Place the eggs on a toothpick pushed into styrofoam to dry.  For polka dots, simply dab the tip of your finger into the glue, dot onto the egg, and cover with glitter, shaking off the excess.  For stripes, use two pieces of washi tape wrapped around the egg to make a straight line between – apply glue and glitter.  Remove the washi tape before the glue dries.

They’re beautiful, aren’t they?  Make some, okay?  Need any eggs?? This is the most fun I’ve had with Easter egg decorations in a long while!

Cookie Decorating with Wafer Paper

April 5, 2012 by girlinspired 16 Comments

Did you know you can pick up wafer paper printed with edible ink in a variety of images?  I picked out some cute bunnies to try and I couldn’t resist the vintage Easter images so I purchased some of those, too!
I’m definitely less experienced in the cookie-making arena and this was a good beginner project.  The girls and I mixed up a batch of sugar cookie dough and we each set to work with our own rolling pins.  They made bunnies and chicks and huge Easter eggs.  I was boring with my ovals.  I probably need a better oval cutter since I just squished one of my round fluted cutters into a not-so-perfect oval.  After baking up the cookies, I frosted them with a flood of royal icing (more not-so-perfect ovals) and left them to dry overnight.  The next day, I handed out piping bags of colored icing to the kids and while they went wild, I set to work with the wafer paper.

Application was simple.  Cut out the design, brush corn syrup on the back of the image, and smooth onto the cookie.  Set the cookies face down for 15 minutes and then turn them up to dry for a while longer.

Then, you can put a beaded border around the perimeter of the image if you want.

So, the critic in me wishes that I’d used a better cookie cutter and that my hand would somehow become steadier with the piping.  But, really, when the whole plate of cookies is set out together, you rarely notice the individual imperfections.  Definitely a fun activity with pretty results and something that I could do side by side with my little helpers.  Double bonus points!!

I purchased my wafer paper at Fancy Flours.

"Crack Me" Easter Eggs

March 30, 2012 by girlinspired 2 Comments

I found these eggs at Beyond/Beyond through Pinterest and had to copy.  I used some lovely brown eggs that a mom at preschool brought me from her chickies (oh, how I want some chickies of my own).  I’ve never blown out eggs before, and it was a little bit fun and a lot more mouth work than I had anticipated.  Here’s the gist of it.
You pierce a hole in each end of the egg.  I used an embroidery needle and a little hammer to tap it in.  If you’re going to insert a note into your egg, you’ll need a bit of a larger hole.  The larger the holes, the easier (and quicker!) it is to blow out the insides.  Okay, so once you have your holes, stick your needle in there and stir things around a bit.  To blow the insides out, I used one of the kids’ sippy cup straws – the flexible, thick rubber straws.  They suctioned up nicely to the hole and held in place.  So, you just blow through the straw into the egg and the insides come out the other side.  This was not the fastest process.  But, it worked.  Then, I rinsed the egg out and set them out to dry for a couple days.  (I also just read somewhere that you can rinse with a little Bleach, too, to sterilize the inside).   The rest is easy!  Write some Easter-y love notes, roll them up and stick them inside.
You can make a cute little “crack me” box to display them in.  One of my readers left a note about some quail eggs she just did; she packaged them with shredded brown tissue paper and muffin cups.  Doesn’t that sound beautiful!
 Have fun!!

Molded Chocolate Bunnies

March 28, 2012 by girlinspired 7 Comments

Have you worked with chocolate easy-melts or candy melts yet?  Molded candies are quick to make and look like you purchased them straight from the candy shoppe!  Purchase easy melts from a local or online cake/candy supply store.  The Wilton brand is available in most large chain stores, but I have had less success with that brand.  (Also, for a pure white candy, you’ll want to look specifically for the pure white candy melts.)
So, you put the melts in a microwave safe bowl and heat in 30 second intervals.  Stir after EVERY interval using a dry, silicone spatula.  When the candy is completely smooth, it is ready to pour into the molds.
Molds are available online or at cake/candy stores and they are very inexpensive.  Pour the candy into the mold and tap it gently on your work surface so that any air bubbles rise to the surface.
Allow the candy to cool and harden completely; I stick them out in the garage while the weather is cold.  You can also pop them in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.
Twist the mold gently and examine the candy to determine if it is ready to come out of the mold;  when it easily comes away from the mold, tip the mold over and dump the candy out.
To make a whole chocolate bunny, I found that the easiest method of combining the two halves is to make the first half, cool it completely, and remove it from the mold.  Then, pour additional melted candy into the other side of the bunny mold and place the hardened first half onto the surface of the freshly poured half – does that make sense?
When the second half cools and hardens, the two halves will be joined together.  Tie a ribbon around the neck for a pretty finishing touch.
Some tips:
  • Use a silicone spatula for stirring the melts; do not use metal.
  • Do not allow any water to come into contact with the candy; it will cause the candy to seize up.
  • Do not overheat the melts; microwave no more than 30 seconds at a time and stir very well every time.
  • Use a good quality candy melt.
  • These instructions are for the use of chocolate easy-melts.  Real chocolate requires tempering and is more involved.
I also came across some Easter reproduction vintage chocolate molds.  I put them out for my spring mantle display.  Loving the vintage combined with the white ceramic!

Silk Easter Dress

March 23, 2012 by girlinspired 18 Comments

As I mentioned previously, I think this silk dress is one of the most gorgeous things I have ever made.  It makes my heart skip a beat a little.
I think it makes Addie’s heart skip a little, too.
Let’s talk through the details of making the dress.  The bodice was cut from Whimsy Couture’s knot dress pattern – I used the 12-18 month size pattern pieces for the dress bodice.  My finished dress is a size 3T.  {I noticed that the knot dress pattern that she has for sale now is a “remixed” pattern and indicates “better fitting bodices” so you may need to adjust accordingly}  Before sewing the bodice and bodice lining together, I made two straps by cutting fabric strips about 2″ wide, then turned the edges in to the center and pressed, then pressed in half again and stitched down the sides (to finish with 1/2″ wide straps).  Measure on your child to approximate the length of the straps.  I set the straps 3″ from the center on each side and then sewed the bodice front and back to the bodice lining.
The dress closes with an invisible, side zipper.
I used two 36″ wide panels of fabric for the skirt – gather attach to bodice with side open for the zipper.  There is a simple pressed under hem and then I stitched a beautiful flower trim around the bottom.  I found the trim at a scrapbook store – I’m headed there today so I’ll try to snag some more and write down the manufacturer.  Have I mentioned before that scrapbook manufacturers have THE BEST trim?  I think so, at least.
The dress is worn with a fluffy pettiskirt for extra fancy, but I also love the dress without the pettiskirt or brooch.  Simple and white are probably my favorite combination ever.  I wasn’t going to try the photo shoot until Addie actually wears it for Easter (what with the white silk at all), but Addie seriously begged me for a photo shoot and volunteered that she would smile really nice.  So, we tried that.  After she was finished making silly faces at herself in the dresser mirror, she gave me three hundred pouty and silly faces and two smiles.  SO!  That is what we have to share today.

This post is so long already, I’m going to do a tutorial for the brooch separately.
I’m headed to a photography class tonight – do you think they’ll teach me how to get my kids to pose pretty in less than 500 pictures???
Who has fun plans for the weekend?  Please share!
