Peacock Costume

October 21, 2015 by girlinspired 2 Comments

Once you have learned how to make a tutu, the costume options are endless.  Have you ever sewn a tutu? Be sure to read through the tips in my original tutu tutorial that will teach you how to make a tutu that won’t scratch your little one’s skin! Then read on for this tutorial on a stunning twist on the traditional tutu where you can make all your daughter’s dreams come true by whipping up this homemade Peacock Costume!
Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!I struggle with Halloween costumes.  I can get really, REALLY into sewing up something spectacular, but I’m also acutely aware that the amount of time that a costume will be worn is about 1/20th the amount of time that it I might spend making it.  Nevertheless, I usually make at least one of the girls’ costumes, if not all.  And almost every year, someone wears a tutu.  Maybe it’s because it’s just so easy to make a tutu or that they are so versatile – from princess to bumblebee, all you have to do is switch up the color and you have a great costume foundation!  Once you sew your tutu, you can pair it with a plain top or leotard and some tights; add a few accessories and you’re set!  You can also adjust the costume for the weather.  The overall time/money investment is drastically reduced (in my house, at least) if I can figure out a way to make a costume out of a tutu. This year….we’ve turned the tutu into one mighty fine PEACOCK!

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Please excuse me while I gawk at the gorgeousness that is my daughter.  She transformed into a dramatic, little peacock for our photo shoot and, as so often happens, completely takes my breath away.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!Ready to make a tutu?  Get ready to wrestle some tulle, but don’t worry, it’ll all be worth it!

For this Peacock Costume, you will need the following supplies which are available in Jo-Ann or online at Jo-Ann and my Amazon affiliate links below:

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!4 yards each, of 5 colors of tulle**
1 1/2 inch black knit elastic, 1 yard
black thread
Maker’s Halloween Peacock headband (optional)
feather trim, 1 yard (optional)
Tulip shimmer face makeup
black leotard, tights, shoes (use items already in the closet!)

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 1:  Begin by measuring your child’s waist and the desired length of the tutu – for example, I measured from the waist to the ankle for a long, dramatic tutu.  Make a note of the waist measurement and set that aside.  We will begin by cutting the tulle into sections according to the length measurement.  Fold the tulle along it’s width (typically 56″ for tulle).  Your yardage will drape off the cutting mat.  We need to cut five sections of tulle at the desired length.  My measurement was 26″ from waist to ankle, so I cut five sections of this cobalt blue tulle to measure 26″ long (and 56″ inches wide).  **If you are making a shorter skirt or sewing for a toddler, you will want to measure the length and multiply that by 5 to determine the amount of tulle to purchase.  For example, if your desired length of finished skirt was 12″, you would only need (12″ x 5=) 1.75 yards of each color of tulle.  Be sure to add 6″ or so on to your finished yardage to make sure you have a little excess.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 2:  Continue to cut your other colors of tulle so that you have 5 pieces for each of the five colors – 25 sections in all.  Line them up next to your sewing machine in color/hue/saturation order.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 3:  Now it’s time to gather the tulle sections.  The quickest way to gather the tulle is by letting your sewing machine do the work for you.  Using your regular presser foot, adjust the sewing machine settings so that you are using the longest stitch length and the highest tension.  With these adjusted settings, you simply feed the tulle through and the machine gathers it for you.  Also, since it’s stitching on tulle, you will be able to adjust the gathers later even though you’re tension is set high.  Be sure to leave about 7″ of thread hanging at the beginning and end of each sewn layer so you can adjust the gathers later.  Begin with the lightest shade of tulle (I started with the aqua as seen two pictures above) and stitch along the long edge of the tulle (the side measuring 56″).  The machine should gather this section and when it is gathered, it should measure around 5-7″.  That’s a lot of gathering, right?!  Stop when you have just about 1″ of tulle left to gather and keep your needle down in the tulle.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 4:  Pick up your next shade of tulle.  Place the new piece of tulle to overlap the previous piece by 1/2-1″, as shown.  Use your fingers to guide the tulle under the presser foot and continue gathering until you get within 1″ of the next end.  You will notice that by overlapping the ends, the machine continues gathering the fabric seamlessly.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!Step 5:  Continue with subsequent shades of tulle until you have five pieces gathered together.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 6:  Now, it’s time to gather up the sections for the next layer of skirt.  We are going to rotate the color order of the tulle so that when the final five layers are set on top of one another, the colors all vary for each layer.  Start with “Shade 2”, sew/gather, continuing to add “Shade 3,4,5” and so on until you finish with “Shade 1.”

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 7: Once you have all five layers of tulle stacked on top of one another, you can see how the colors shift down one for each layer.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 8:  When you have all five layers gathered, it’s time to adjust the gathers for the waist measurement.  Take the waist measurement of your child and add 5″.  Now divide that new measurement by 5 (for the 5 colors of tulle) to determine how wide each gathered section should be.  So, my waist measurement was 20″, I added 5″, divided by 5 and found that each of my gathered colors should be 5″ wide each for a total skirt width of 25″.  Pull the bobbin threads gently and shift the gathers to adjust the section widths and make the layer the correct overall width.  Adjust all 5 skirt layers so they are uniform in width.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 9:  Time to sew the layers together!!  You probably won’t be able to sew all five layers of skirt together at once, but you may be able to do 3 layers and then 2 layers and then sew those together.  Using these clips to hold the tulle together is helpful in the tulle wresting game!  Match the raw edges the best you can and sew them together using a regular stitch length and tension.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 9:  Pat yourself on the back once you’ve wrestled all five layers into a neatly sewn strip.  You’re almost done!

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 10:  Time to sew on the elastic waistband.  Cut a section of black elastic to the exact length of your child’s waist measurement.  This should be 5″ shorter than the prepared skirt.  Match the center of the elastic to the center of the skirt and pin it so that the elastic is on top of the skirt, with the raw edge of the tulle coming up behind the elastic no more than halfway.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 11:  Sew the elastic waistband onto the tulle skirt using a wide zigzag stitch.  Stretch the elastic as you sew so that the end of the elastic extends  about 1/4″ past the end of the skirt, on each end.  I found it easiest to sew out from the middle where I had pinned the elastic, stretching as I sewed.  Also, be sure that you’re catching the tulle underneath with your stitches and that the raw edge of the tulle remains about midway up the back of the elastic.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

Step 12:  Finally, overlap the raw ends of elastic waistband and stitch them together using a zigzag stitch.  DONE!!!

Use accessories and makeup to get your little peacock ready for trick ‘o’ treating!  This Tulip Shimmer Makeup worked REALLY well.  It was much thicker and provided better coverage than the cheap costume makeup that you get in the Halloween section at the big box stores this time of year.  I’ve never ever done face painting before and I think it turned out great for my first try!  She thought it was super glamorous, too!  It takes some work to remove it completely, though, so keep that it mind.  I’m sure makeup remover would come in handy.  We just used a warm, soapy washcloth, which removed almost all of it, though the blue right around her eyes took an extra day to come off completely since we didn’t want to scrub on her eyes.

Make this dramatic tutu for a simple, but stunning Peacock Costume!

I added this feather fringe trim around the neckline of the leotard with just a few quick basting stitches.  That way, it looks festive for Halloween, but I can take it right off when it’s time to head to dance class!

After I’ve spent a couple hours wrestling tulle, it is so nice to find a few ready-made accessories to pair with the ensemble.  I loved this Peacock Headband to complete the outfit – it was in the aisle with all the hair accessories at Jo-Anns.  You can also find it online, which I linked to above.

What costumes are your little ones dreaming up this year?  If you get to work a tutu into the ensemble, I’d encourage you to also visit this Soft Waistband Tutu tutorial, which is great if the tutu is going to be touching their skin – you can use this same Peacock Tutu tutorial and just incorporate the knit waistband and lining.  Have fun!

5 DIY Halloween Cupcakes

October 27, 2014 by girlinspired 3 Comments

5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!#DIY4Halloween Halloween is just days away!  What projects are you still working on?  I know things get all crazy in the days right before a holiday and then I remember at the last minute that I volunteered to bring cupcakes….always happens.  So!  I’ve put together 5 awesome ways to decorate your Halloween cupcakes that anyone can do in a pinch!  I found the supplies to make these cupcakes at Jo-Ann.  These DIY Halloween cupcakes are being shared as part of their sponsored Halloween campaign – a HALLOWEEN TO DIY for!! 5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

Mummy Cupcakes

5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

Supplies: White Decorator Icing (or desired base color – it will peek through the mummy strips) “Wilton “Mummy” Cupcake Decorating Kit kitchen scissors Instructions:  These cupcakes are so easy to make!  Spread a layer of icing over the top of your cupcake – no need for it to be neat or smooth.  Use kitchen scissors to cut strips of sugar-dusted fondant (“mummy strips”) and place in semi-straight lines over the top of the cupcake.  The kit has the strips rolled into sections that each cover one cupcake, so it makes it really simple!  Lay a strip or two at an angle across the cupcake.  Place two small dots of icing in the desired place for the eyes (also included in the kit).  Gently press the candy eyes on top of the icing.  Presto!5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

 Easy Decorative Paper-Topped Cupcakes

5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make! Supplies: Frosting – any kind Edible Decorating Paper (Sugar Sheets) Decorative Toothpicks/Cupcake Wrappers (optional) Instructions:  These Sugar Sheets from Wilton couldn’t be easier to use.  Spread a nice layer of frosting on top of your cupcake.  Cut a shape out of the sugar sheet and plunk it on top.  I cut simple circles (and used my scrapbooking circle cutters to do it).  The sheet cuts easily with a knife and is pretty soft, flexible, and thin.  I think you could even use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes.  Add a decorative toothpick to the center or leave them as is!  There are tons of Sugar Sheets in various patterns and colors at Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores and they’re only a few dollars per sheet – I bought this houndstooth print at the Wilton store when I was there in the spring, so I’m not sure about the availability of this specific pattern, but there’s a nice damask and zebra in black and white available at Jo-Ann online. 5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

Candy Corn Cupcakes

5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

Supplies: Decorator Icing Orange and Yellow Gel Food Coloring Candy Corns Piping Bag and large coupler set Tip #1M Instructions: Use for coloring to tint icing yellow and orange.  Place into plastic Ziploc baggies.  When ready to use, snip the corner off the bottom of the baggy and place inside piping bag with open corner pushed down into the tip.  Using tip #1M, pipe two swirls around the cupcake of each color, yellow, then orange, then white.  Top with a candy corn.  Please note:  These make quite the top-heavy, yet excitement-inducing cupcake.  You can use a smaller tip for smaller icing mounds.  Also, make your swirls just inside the top of the cupcake and then decrease the diameter of each subsequent swirl to decrease the risk of the icing spilling over the edges of the cupcake once it’s done. 5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

Ghost Cupcakes

5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make! Supplies: Decorator Icing in white Pre-Colored Black Decorator Icing Piping Bag and couplers Tip #2A (uses the large coupler set) Tip #2 (uses the small coupler set) Instructions:  With Tip #2A, pipe two stacked swirls of white icing (the second swirl a bit smaller than the first) on the top of the cupcake.  Hold the tip vertically and squeeze a pool of frosting on the top center, keeping the tip close to the base – as you release pressure on the piping bag, quickly lift the tip straight up to make a point.  Attach Tip #2 directly onto the black icing container and pipe two eyes and a mouth. 5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

Spiderweb Cupcakes

5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make!

Supplies: White Frosting Pre-Colored Black Decorator Icing Tip #2 (uses the small coupler set) toothpick spider rings (optional) Instructions:Use a knife or spatula to frost a smooth flat top on the cupcakes with white icing (you could use colored frosting, too).  With the small tip #2 attached to the black icing tube, pipe a center dot and then 3-4 rings around the top of the cupcake – like a bullseye.  Using a toothpick to drag the black icing from the center dot out to the edge.  Repeat the dragging motion in equal segments around the cupcake – about 6-8 segments – kind of like slicing a pie.  Top with a toy spider/spider ring! Speed up cupcake decorating with pre-made frosting that tastes good and can be piped for decorating! One more thing:  I usually like to make my own frosting, but sometimes that extra step is just the final straw in running out of time to make something special.  For these cupcakes, I used this pre-made frosting that is available at Jo-Ann.  It’s made my Wilton and you know what?  It actually tastes pretty darn good!  It’s great for coloring and piping.  And if you use a coupon, you’ll probably spend less than buying the butter and eggs to make a couple batches of Swiss Meringue Buttercream (my personal favorite, though kids probably prefer this type of icing).  Just wanted to give you my two cents on this stuff because I’ve been wondering about it for a good long while! 5 Awesome DIY Halloween Cupcakes that anyone can make! Shriek to Chic Halloween Party Decor

Shriek to Chic Halloween Party Decor - free printables, easy decor ideas #DIY4Halloween

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a chic party setup.  Halloween lends the perfect opportunity to have a little fun with the decor.  I don’t get too crazy, but I did get overly excited about the possibilities when I was listening to the “Caspar” movie that the girls were watching last weekend.  I wasn’t paying too much attention and I actually have no idea what was going on, but the ghosts were joking about a party and said, “Scream or sugar?” and I just couldn’t go on with my life until I used the phrase in some Halloween decor.  You know how that goes….

Shriek to Chic Halloween Party Decor - free printables, easy decor ideas #DIY4Halloween

I’ve teamed up with Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores today to bring you this “Shriek to Chic” post for their Halloween to DIY for.  Eek!  I love that theme!  I think black and white is always chic, and I’ve collected some great materials to create easy and affordable Halloween decor.  Plus, I have free printables for you to use!

The Halloween section at Jo-Ann is such a treasure trove of inexpensive supplies.  I knew that I wanted to stick with a mostly black and white look, so I collected items that fit within that framework.  I grabbed a couple things (hanging tissue medallions and a window decal) to use in central locations and then several items that could be used across multiple decor pieces (like the spider and glass/bottle decals).  To create my chalkboard “scream or sugar” and haunted house pictures, I used 8×10 canvas boards and chalkboard paint; I also found wrought iron picture stands that come in really handy for standing up plates and signs to places you don’t typically have decor!  Black lace or fabric makes the easiest table covering, particularly because you can just bunch it up on your tabletop and it looks great without any hemming or anything!

Shriek to Chic Halloween Party Decor - free printables, easy decor ideas #DIY4Halloween

I made the chalkboard art the same way that I made the Chalkboard Halloween Sign that I shared last week – using my Cricut to cut out the image.  You can find all the chalkboard sign details here.  Rather than creating the chalkboards on mounted canvas, though, I did them on flat 8×10 canvas boards, which you can find in the same section as the mounted canvas (at Jo-Ann). Download the FREE images for uploading to your cutting machine software here:

  • “Halloween Haunted House”
  • “Scream or Sugar”

If you don’t want to cut out the image and use it to stencil chalkboards, you can simply print and frame the images.  Click on the images below to open the full resolution image and download each for printing.  With either method, simply pop the finished piece into a frame or stand up using a picture stand and you’ve got awesome decor ready to go!

"Scream or Sugar" Chalkboard Sign FREE PRINTABLE #DIY4Halloween

I staged the pictures in a little area that can double as a drink/coffee station.  Some black lace fabric, the grey tissue medallions, a couple pumpkins, and a plate with a huge spider decal pull the whole area together!

Shriek to Chic Halloween Party Decor - free printables, easy decor ideas #DIY4Halloween

The black lace cup decals look really festive, too, though they were kind of hard to work with.  You need to use glasses that do not have tapered sides, since the decals are cut in a straight line.  It was even tricky getting them onto my mugs.  I still like the way they look, though – very chic!  I added some to a large bottle, too, and filled it with candy corn.  Get a sneak peak of it below! Easy, easy decor – I like it!

Halloween Chalkboard Sign and Cricut Explore Giveaway!!

October 17, 2014 by girlinspired 41 Comments

Halloween Chalkboard Sign + free image/printable

With only two weeks to go, I’ve opened up the Halloween bins and put up some decorations.  The girls get super silly and scatter skeleton bones around the house and drape snakes around their necks.  I debate between trying to keep the mess contained and letting them have their holiday fun.  I was brainstorming ideas for this month’s Cricut Design Space™ Star Challenge and found myself really wanting to make a big chalkboard sign to bring something new and fun to our Halloween decor.
**This post contains affiliate links.**
Halloween Chalkboard Sign + free image/printableOnce I put together the image file in Photoshop, I was able to create the project with my Cricut, vinyl, and a large canvas.  I’ll share the file if you’d like to make one, too.  Don’t have a Cricut Explore?  Well, BIG NEWS!!  My team is giving one away to one of you!  There’s a Rafflecopter at the bottom of this post where you can get all your entries in!  I’m excited for ya because this machine is so much fun to use!  Let’s get to the project:

Halloween Chalkboard Sign + free image/printable

You will need:

Cricut Explore or cutting machine with 12″x 24″ cutting capability
12″ x 24″ cutting mat
vinyl (12″ x 24″)
vinyl transfer sheet (12″ x 24″)
Halloween Chalkboard Sign file – click here to download
15″ x 30″ stretched canvas
chalkboard paint
liquid chalk pens or white paint

Begin by coating your canvas in chalkboard paint. I used a canvas that already had a coat of pink latex paint on it and my chalkboard spray paint completely covered it in just one coat. If you don’t have paint to prime the canvas with first, it may take more than one coat. Allow the canvas to dry completely. If you want to use a different size canvas, you should be able to easily use anything smaller with just a little adjustment of the image.

Halloween Chalkboard Sign + free image/printable

Upload the Halloween Chalkboard Sign .png file to your Cricut Design Space software.  Adjust the image to fit a 12″ x 24″ cutting space.  Lay your sheet of vinyl with backing attached onto the cutting mat and cut out the image.  This will take a while, but hang in there – the Cricut Explore doesn’t need babysitting and I haven’t had it mess up in the middle of cutting yet.  Grab a fresh cup of coffee and check up on your drying canvas.  Once the design is cut from the vinyl, you will need to remove all of the words and images so that only the negative space remains.

Halloween Chalkboard Sign + free image/printableUse a pick tool to get the tiny little letters out cleanly.  “How I Met Your Mother” reruns come in handy while you’re doing this – or perhaps a nightime viewing of The Shining??

Halloween Chalkboard Sign + free image/printable

You will need to use a vinyl transfer sheet to move the design outline from its backing onto the chalkboard canvas.  This is painless as long as you use the transfer sheets!

Halloween Chalkboard Sign + free image/printable Once you’ve placed the design onto the canvas (centered please!), peel off the transfer sheet and you’re ready to paint in the design.  I used a liquid chalk pen because I thought it would give the canvas a more authentic chalkboard feel.  The chalk pen bled a bit under the vinyl, which hasn’t happened with regular paint when I’ve done something similar in the past.  Use whichever painting medium you prefer.  Peel off the vinyl, using the pick tool to remove the small pieces, such as the centers of a’s and o’s and your canvas is just about done!  You can gently spray it with a couple coats of clear paint to set the chalk or just leave it as is.  Hang or prop it up on the wall and admire its festive beauty!

Now, it’s time to enter the giveaway for a Cricut Explore – SO EXCITED TO GIVE THIS AWAY!

DIY Halloween Costume IdeasDo you have your costumes together yet?  Do you dress up as a family, just dress up the kids, put a lot of effort into your own costume?  I’ve been ignoring the looming deadline, but finally asked the kids what they want to be.  Thankfully, my little one assured me that she wants nothing more than to be a black kitty again, so it’s just the older two that need costumes.  eek!  The kids like to encourage me to expand my DIY Halloween Costume experience.  I tried to toss out ideas for some of the costumes that have been used in the past, but there were no takers.

DIY Temporary Tattoos

October 23, 2013 by girlinspired 1 Comment

DIY-Temporary-Tattoos-5

I ‘ve just about wrapped up all of my Halloween projects for this year.  It’s time to set down the crafting and do a little more enjoying of the festivities.  Today, I’m off helping my daughter’s class build a scarecrow for their school’s fall festival.  Not sure how I got roped into the scarecrow creation – I’ve never built one in my life, wish us luck.  At least I’m bringing candy popcorn to distract the students from my obvious lack of experience with the scarecrow.  hahaha!

DIY Temporary Tattoos - make your own custom tattoos!!

I did want to share these tattoos that I made with my Silhouette last week.  I cannot get over that you can make custom tattoos – DIY Temporary Tattoos – what??!!  Did you know about this?    You can purchase the tattoo paper and then create your layout using the Silhouette software.  I purchased several designs (for 99cents each) that are “print and cut”,  and arranged them in an 8 1/2″ x 11″ space.  Then you put the sheet of printable tattoo paper in your home printer and print the designs along with the register marks.

DIY Temporary Tattoos - make your own custom tattoos!!

Once the designs are done printing, you add the included adhesive sheet over the page and place it on the cutting mat.  Once you hit “cut”, the machine scans the sheet to find the register marks so that it knows exactly where to cut out the designs.  I haven’t used this function before and I didn’t think it could possibly work out accurately – but it did!   It cuts around each design perfectly, you peel off the excess paper, and the tattoos are ready to use!

DIY Temporary Tattoos - make your own custom tattoos!!

Sooooo cool!  I was a little eager to try these out and maximize my space and some of the designs ended up kind of small – good to know for next time.

DIY Temporary Tattoos - make your own custom tattoos!!
I think it would be so fun to use these as an alternate to candy for trick or treaters or to hand out in goody bags at a party.  My girls love temporary tattoos.  Oh!  And I have a tip for getting off some of those tattoos that last through several baths – rubbing alcohol – takes ’em right off.

The tattoo paper kit is included in the Silhouette October special bundle.  More on the bundle when I shared the Black Cat Treat Boxes.
