Holiday Shift Dress and Lace Leggings

January 2, 2013 by girlinspired 11 Comments

I stitched up this darling and simple shift dress for Addie to wear for the holidays.  At age 3, she wants nothing much to do with any clothing other than pajamas, stretchy pants, and simple dresses.  I knew that she would refuse to wear anything frilly or fancy and this little pattern was absolutely perfect.  It’s the new Go To Patterns Shift Dress.  (affiliate links) It’s just two pieces, with bias tape around the neckline, armholes, and keyhole cutout in the back.  I used a silk/cotton blend for the dress – it’s called Radiance by Robert Kauffman, the same fabric that I used to make the pink princess gown last year, the stuff is dreamy.  To coordinate with the lace dress Grace would be wearing for Christmas, I imagined that this shift dress would pair great with some black lace tights or leggings.  I wasn’t able to find stretch black lace locally, so I attempted to dye a white lace.  I used the stove top method with salt for black Rit dye on this nylon/cotton/spandex blend lace and it came out with a rich, even blackness.  I used the Go To Leggings pattern to make a pair of footless tights; I skipped hemming the pants – they took about 10 minutes to sew together – love that pattern.  Of course, the chances of convincing Addie to have her picture taken are slim to none.  When she put the leggings on late Sunday afternoon and requested a photo shoot, I JUMPED to get the dress on her and race outside.

You’ll have to excuse the blurry, less than ideal pictures.  The kid is adorable, the clothes are awesome, the photography is poooooooor.  But, I wasn’t looking at my camera settings, I was just trying to click the shutter as fast as I could before the little boss called the whole thing off.  See her grand finale down there in the corner?  She busted out her 60’s dance moves – plugged her nose and shimmied all the way down to the ground, laughing hysterically.  Amazing how much of her personality I caught even if the pictures aren’t grand!

Basic Bodice Christmas Dress

December 6, 2012 by girlinspired 7 Comments

I started working on Christmas dress sewing.  I’ve grown tired of traditional Christmas colors and dresses that only get worn once or twice.  This year, I think we’re going with black and champagne.  Pretty, right?  First up is Grace’s dress….or at least, what was supposed to be a dress until I hemmed it too short.  I suppose she’s getting pants, too!  Want to know how to make a lace dress using any basic bodice?  I’m sharing the details today over at icandy handmade for Jen and Autie’s Basic Bodice Design Series.

Designed by Olivia, age 7

December 5, 2012 by girlinspired 3 Comments

If you missed the dress and purse I made for the K.I.D.S project at Me Sew Crazy, I’m posting it here today.  I hope it inspires you to hand the design reigns over to your little one at some point.

I am SO thrilled to be participating in the amazing K.I.D.S. project here at Me Sew Crazy.  Seriously, brilliant series.  My girls see me playing with fabric all the time and they love to get involved in any way they can.  Olivia is especially interested in fashion design and at age 7, she’s getting pretty good at sketching up just what she wants.  She didn’t skip a beat when I asked her to draw anything and I would make it for her.

I think her design turned out quite chic and I did my best to replicate it….minus the 10-inch heels…though I did let her go pick out some of my heels to wear for the photo shoot.
To make the dress, I started with the “Ashley Knit Dress” by Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop, but elongated the bodice all the way to knee length, shortened the sleeves, and added two rows of ruffles around the hem.
Since Olivia is so petite, I worked off of a size 4 pattern and custom fit the sleeve and hem lengths.  I used a really soft, jersey knit for the dress, as I was trying to mimic Olivia’s sleek design.  I think it was a good fit for a child’s dress, but I was concerned that it might look too much like a nightgown, so I added a silk bow on the shoulder for just a little touch of dressiness.
Of course, Olivia included accessories in her design, so I stitched up a “phurse” based on her sketch.
This was super quick and fun to make and Olivia was THRILLED that it actually opened.
The temperature here has dropped drastically in the last few days so we had to run out in the freezing cold for a quick photo shoot the other evening.  We left the phurse on the counter inside and had to run out again for another shot with it.  Olivia was SO cold, but totally determined to model her design!!
I love how she poses in all her pictures – such a natural!  I guess her mama would think so!
Anyhow, thank you so much for inviting me to participate in this series, Jessica!  One of my favorite projects yet and I love seeing what all the other little ones are designing!

Hailey Ruffled Up Jacket

November 30, 2012 by girlinspired 20 Comments

Along with the skinny jeans pattern I shared last week, I had been eyeing the Hailey Ruffled Up Jacket for quite awhile and I finally got to make it!  My little one has been giving me such a hard time with her clothing lately, but she seems to really, really dig the jackets that I’ve made her.  And she was all over the fabrics that I chose for this jacket.
I used a silky synthetic for the outside of the jacket and a gorgeous Japanese cotton for the lining.  Like all of Peekaboo’s patterns that I’ve sewn, this one had clear, detailed instructions and the construction of the jacket came together smoothly.

The jacket is fully lined, which I just think adds a bit of fun and fancy to the design.  In fact, with just a couple minor modifications to the pattern, you could have this jacket fully reversible!  (And I realize you can’t actually see the lining very well here, but between this strong-willed little girl and the terrible gloomy weather, we were lacking in the cooperation department).

I especially loved the technique used for the ruffles on the jacket; they have just a tiny bit of fray and aren’t overly bulky.  The ruffle is small enough that it doesn’t flop too much or brush up against the skin in an uncomfortable manner.  It just stands up perfectly in a flattering curve around the neck and down to the hem.  Love!  When I sew this pattern again, I do need to be more careful about where the seams in the ruffle fall as I ended up with a seam right in the front under the chin – it’s not so noticeable that I was willing to seam rip the whole jacket and do it over, but it does bug me.  This was just a matter of me not paying attention to what I was doing.

Skinny Jeans (and a GIVEAWAY!)

November 21, 2012 by girlinspired 88 Comments

You know how much I love Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop, right?  When Amy came out with the Skinny Jeans pattern, I was super excited!  In case you haven’t noticed, my girls have my petite genes and we are all about the skinny jeans.  Olivia, especially, has a hard time finding pants that fit as she gets taller, but is still slim enough to pull on 12-18 month pants.  I’m not even kidding.  When I got the Skinny Jeans pattern, I was too impatient to shop for stretchy denim; I wanted to try them right away! I was looking at the leftover remnant of that great grey/yellow fabric that I made my jacket out of last week and I thought it would look awesome in pants!  I had just enough for a 4T, which is Grace’s size and the fabric is just her style.  I totally love these pants!!

They have a flat front with faux fly and opening button front (if you wish…I didn’t) and an adjustable elastic back waistband.  Full, lined pockets in the front and pockets in the back, belt loops and great topstitching.  I went with a blue thread to add a little pizazz.  I thought the pattern would be time-consuming with all the pockets and the topstitching, but actually, I finished the whole pair in a few hours after the kids were in bed one evening.

Most importantly, Grace LOVES these pants.  I’m anxious to grab some more stretchy denim and make Olivia a couple pairs of new pants (she’s anxious, too!).

What do you think?  Do you want to try out this pattern, too?  Today, Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop is giving one lucky reader their choice of FIVE PDF PATTERNS from the shop.  Woohoo!  Entry criteria for this giveaway is as follows (Please leave a comment for EACH entry):

Leggings – Go To Patterns

November 20, 2012 by girlinspired 6 Comments

We loooooove leggings around here.  The girls grab leggings most days, they wear them with dresses, tunics, tshirts, under skirts and shorts, with leotards.  Nothing can compete with the ease and comfort of leggings for children’s wear.  I’ve noticed a lot of people making leggings by tracing a pair from the dresser drawer, and I used this method for Olivia’s 80s outfit back during Project Run and Play, with okay results.  But, I’ve really been wanting a pattern, so there’s no guess work involved and I have all the girls’ sizes in one place, with clear instructions so that I don’t screw up and waste fabric.  Last week, Andrea from Go To Patterns released a new sewing pattern, the Go To Leggings. Brilliant!  I printed out the PDF pattern, taped it together, and traced the size 3T onto my handy freezer paper.  I took Addie out to my stash of knits in the garage and she immediately picked this bright pink (shocker) Karavan stretch cotton jersey knit.  (This pattern is Savannah Honey and this line has the cutest elephant prints and some great blue patterns, too.)  I got mine from Fabric.com.
So, the Go To Leggings pattern has a bunch of finishing options, including varied lengths, bows, peek-a-boo holes, and even a built-in skirt!  I wanted to try the ruching option and love the finished result.  Once I ironed the freezer paper onto the fabric and started cutting, the whole process was done and on Addie within 40 minutes.  I used my regular sewing machine for the whole thing.  I’m on the hunt for some more fabric to make leggings in every color.  Love these!

If you’re looking for an easy way to make your own (kid’s) leggings, I highly recommend you grab this pattern.  You can find it in Andrea’s pattern shop, Go To Patterns
