blue skies with a side of sunshine

February 28, 2011 by girlinspired 20 Comments

The snow came.  It lasted only a few minutes.  It was beautiful and quick.  Then the sun came out.  There was no sledding, barely a chance to put on mittens and run outside.  Despite my disappointment, I’m looking forward to spring, to playing outside, to summer clothes, to outdoor projects, to warm sunshine.
I created this dress in a frenzy of sewing late one night.  I wanted to use some of the lace that I found last year at my little local antique shop.  I embellished the knot dress pattern a bit and added the lace all the way around the bottom.  I also added some vintage trim around the top of the bodice.  By securing the straps in the front of the bodice and adding buttonholes in the back, the knot dress easily transforms into this alternate style.  I love that, by tying the bow in the back, the front of the dress has extra room for a pretty flower.  It reminds me of a little burst of sunshine.  I struggled with the finishing touches, but once I put the blue ric rac up top and the little white ruffle on the seam between fabric and lace around the bottom, I knew it was perfect.
I was planning to sell this dress, but when I tried it on Addie to confirm sizing, it looked so cute that I think I might just have to keep it and call it her Easter dress.

blue

This new dress pattern comes together quickly and I love the casual, feminine print on the fabric, paired with the satin and shimmer on the brooch.  I’ve been keeping the fabric for a while now; it’s a Basic Grey design.  The print first captured my attention as scrapbook paper.
See here?  Before Gracie was even born, I created this scrapbook page so that it would be ready for her newborn picture when she arrived.  Love that pretty blue paper!  And I love the mess of Basic Grey papers and tags from the “Blush” line.
The fabric line is also “Blush” and this print is “Admire” in Charmed by Basic Grey for Moda.  Which fabric from your stash has been calling you?  I’m working on a little number with a different turqouise fabric this week, paired with some purple.  I hope it turns out lovely so that I can share it with you soon!
Olivia loves her new dress.  Sweet girl, she knew I was sewing her something and the next morning she woke up and said she wanted to wear it to school, sight unseen.  Now that’s some trust in your mama!  It was really cute over her “jeggings”; I can’t wait to see her wear it without long sleeves and pants or tights.
I have a little more work to do on this brooch.  (Don’t you love the little vintage pin on there?  I picked that up at my favorite antique shop a while back, too).  Anyway, the whole ensemble is so large that the little bar pin on the back doesn’t support it very well.  Liv doesn’t care, but it bugs me!  Any suggestions??

pretty in pink

January 31, 2011 by girlinspired 40 Comments

I’ve tinkered with the knot dress pattern several times since the first time I sewed Addison’s birthday dress.  This time, I used a light pink Kona cotton for the main skirt and it turned out so beautifully.  The dress looks and feels luxurious.  This particular cotton is more substantial and drapes nicely.  I prefer the ruffles sewn on 1/4 of the way down from the top of the strip rather than across the center as I originaly did.  This dress will be up for sale in my shop this week.

I made another party hat to coordinate which will also be in the shop.  These hats are too fun.  If you missed the original tutorial, go to the party hat tutorial here.  If you’ve made a hat or two, show me please!  I’d love to see what you’re making!

Happy Monday!

Flirty Skirt and Feathered Party Hat

January 16, 2011 by girlinspired 7 Comments

Flirty, twirly, sassy, and girly, definitely a racecar girl’s dream for a birthday outfit.  A three-tiered ruffle skirt from checkered flag cotton and a quick 03 applique on a white t-shirt (plus quick checkered bows on the sleeve caps).

Of course, I had to do another ruffle party hat.  And this time, Grace’s hairclip doubled as the bow on the hat.  Perfect!!  I just love the sass along with the sweet.  So very Grace!

Tired of party posts yet?  I thought I’d try for one more with the decor…

Party Preparations and Winners!!

September 22, 2010 by girlinspired 8 Comments

The excitement here is mounting – it’s not every day that you get to turn five years old!  Olivia is counting down the days and I am checking off the to-do list.
Dress #2 (remember dress #1 – here??)  It’s okay, I like the second one even better, too, and Olivia changed her mind before I started on anything else that needed to color coordinate), such as:

Fabric flower hairclips for party guests – I might be addicted….
Pinata making – good times, remind me to take it outside the next time I’m going to do a kid activity that involves flour and water – hey, at least the girls had fun!
And the completed pinatas – with dollar store flowers – score!!  Pretty, huh?
