Aaaaaa! This All-Stars season of Project Run and Play is too much fun! Since no one goes home, the pressure is off, and I’m taking the opportunity to experiment, try new things, and create designs that suit each of my girls perfectly. This week, the challenge was to use details to make the outfit shine and I chose leather and metallic accents on a casual outfit for my casual girl. You can read all the details and vote over at Project Run and Play!
I love the metallic stitching, snaps, and studs.
I love the skinny little jeans and the comfortable style with the ruching of the knit tunic.
I like the slightly funky/Western feel of the orange leather accents.
And I love this girl. I’ve mentioned that our first photos were pretty awful because she fell asleep in the car just before we were supposed to take pictures and then was so tired and cranky, she wouldn’t smile for anything. But when we ran outside a couple days later to take pictures, she turned on the charm big time.
I wish you could’ve seen her in action. Hands up on her shoulders, spinning and twirling and flipping her ponytail this way and that, squatting, and showing off the pockets – she was so cute and so funny. When that girl is on, she’s ON!!
Are you as excited as I am to see how everyone used details to create their own designs this week? Head over to Project Run and Play and check them out. And don’t forget to VOTE!!! Thank you so so much for taking this journey with me!

I am really impressed by this outfit. It’s great to see sewing for girls that is not a dress. I love the fabric and color combo. Kudos!!!!

I loved your look this week. I have a question about the metallic pocket. Could you give us a little more information about the material for that? Is that metallic leather? Or what kind of fabric? Where did you source it? I would love to include that type of a detail in an outfit, thank you for the inspiration. I also appreciate seeing a look for a little girl that isn’t typical (not a drop of pink or an inch of ruffle) but is fun and feminine enough for a little girl to love.

Hi there! I found metallic pocket material at Joann’s and it was with some other vinyls/pleathers. It has kind of a spongy back though so it’s definitely a softer synthetic – I would call it vinyl if I had to, but I’m not really sure what it is – put it through the washer today and it came out just fine – I’ll be interested to see if it fades over time – but I guess I can always cut a new pocket to stitch on and pull that one off! The beauty of being a seamstress!

I love the details you added. The whole look is super cute. I’ve been thinking about adding leather details to a short for my son but I have been worried about how I would wash the finished product. How will you wash that shirt and pants? Can the leather just get tossed in the washing machine?
Stef says
Hi Dagny!! I just braved the washing of the outfit today – I washed it on a hand wash cycle and the leather and the metallic material came through okay – I didn’t put the clothes in the dryer. Another concern was if the orange leather would bleed color onto the light colored shirt and I do see a small spot that looks like it may have – but I also left the shirt in the washer for a few hours before pulling it out, so it might have been from that! I’ve never used leather for clothing before, so I guess only time will tell how it fares with the washing!

LOVE it, Stef! Love that it’s a bit out of your comfort zone and not overtly “girly” but really so perfect and tied together – and yeah, i want it in my size too. 🙂
