Hey friends! With the kids headed to school soon (and my littlest one starting Kindergarten!), I am feeling anxious but also excited as I prepare for the school year. I came across an opportunity recently to share how my American Express (Amex) credit card can save me money on back to school items. Money-saving tips are not usually the focus of this space, BUT I love my Amex so much, I really thought it would be a great opportunity to talk about it. This is real life, friends. More on the back to school savings in a minute; first I want to tell you a couple other things about my Amex.
We’ve used Amex for years – I’ve had my computer screen replaced free of charge because of the automatic extended warranty from Amex. When someone walked into a cell phone store and tried to make a purchase for hundreds of dollars on a fraudulent copy of our Amex card, Amex was on top of it in a heartbeat, keeping the incident stress-free for us. When I shopped at some really sketchy shops in the L.A. fabric district, I used my Amex with confidence. All that is wonderful, BUT if you ask my girlfriends, they will tell you that I rave about my Amex with respect to the furnishings in my house that I’ve been able to purchase using my Amex Rewards Points. About once a year, my husband and I take a look at our rewards points and decide on a larger purchase for our home. We’ve purchased our kitchen table and chairs, our dining room table, all of the paint and crown molding for this bedroom, and the chandelier and lamps for this room, all using our rewards points. How awesome is that!
Amex has recently launched a new program called Amex Offers. I’m able to open the Amex app on my iPhone, and tap a button to see retail offers that are available in my area (the app pulls from my GPS location to give me offers nearby). You can also access the same offers/savings on your desktop computer. It’s seriously cool – I was headed to lunch and errands with the girls the other day and I opened the app, saw that Buca di Beppo had a rewards offer going on. I “saved” the offer to my card and we pulled in and had lunch. Then we drove across the street to Whole Foods and stocked up on fancy cheese and heirloom tomatoes (plus school snacks). And THEN, we walked over to Crazy 8 and picked up some school clothes for the girls. I’m going to get a credit (e.g. $15 back when I spend $50) on my Amex card for each of those purchases and I didn’t have to carry coupons with me or have the store scan something or do anything more than tap a couple buttons on my phone while walking into the stores!
Amex provides offers that they think will be relevant for me based on the stores that I frequent and purchases I’ve made, so it’s not like I’m spending money at places that I wouldn’t otherwise go to. I LOVE Whole Foods! I love going out to restaurants! And even though I’d rather my girls just stopped growing, the fact remains that they need clothes for the new school year!
I’ve just started using Amex Offers, so I’m curious to see the types of offers they continue to come up over the coming months (and for Christmas shopping!!) For right now, I feel a little better about the back to school shopping that has to get done. And…more savings on the other stuff means more money for FABRIC, am I right???
Grace was especially excited to show off her new school clothes – hee, hee.
