Today I’m putting this little package of home sewn clothes in the mail for my college girlfriend. She’s expecting her first baby, a little girl, and I wanted to make her something special. I so wished that I could photograph these cute ruffles on a real baby, but since they’re traveling 3000 or so miles, I’ll have to wait for pictures to be sent to me. The baby romper was made in a newborn size using the Ruffled Baby Bubble Romper pattern by Tie Dye Diva. You know I love those ruffles!!
I also made a quick burp cloth by cutting a rectangle of quilter’s weight cotton and a rectangle of chenille and sewing them right sides together, then I turned and topstitched all the way around, closing the opening with the topstitching.
For a stroller blanket, I cut two large squares of the pink rose material and pinned them wrong sides together. I stitched close to the edge all the way around. Then, I made some binding tape with a silky satin and sewed that on to finish the edges (and cover the stitching). I know I would have loved to snuggle that blankie around my newborn babies!!
I couldn’t resist making the baby a lace crown, too. Photographing newborn baby girls with these lace crowns seems to be gaining popularity, so I thought it would be fun to send a photo prop along, you know, just in case. If you haven’t made one of these lace crowns yet, it’s definitely worth the little bit of effort; see my instructions for “Lace Princess Crowns.”
What are your favorite baby gifts to make? I wasn’t sewing much when my girls were first born; I feel like I cheated myself out of some super fun sewing. And unfortunately, “sewing for a newborn” doesn’t seem to provide enough incentive for my husband to get on board with getting us another baby…. I’m excited to have some pregnant friends this year; that should give me the fix I need!

<3 all the precious girly goodies you made! Your friend will be thrilled. My favorite baby gift to give? I love to make monogrammed burp cloths with a fabric border that is made to match the colors and "theme" the parents have chosen. To go along with it a 45" x 45" light weight, wrinkle free receiving/swaddling blanket because in Florida the regular blankets are just too hot. I still have the blanket I made my daughter 30 years ago and my granddaughter got to use it too. I think it is so sweet when items can be passed down in a family.

Very cute! The most popular new baby gift I give away are extra-large receiving blankets. I take a yard of double-napped flannel, cut off the selvage, round the corners, and serge the edges. Commercial receiving blankets are never big enough, and it’s a great present… especially if you’re on a budget!

So adorable, love everything about your gift to your friend. She will love it and it will look so sweet on her little baby girl. The crown is so cute, I think I need to make a couple for my two little granddaughters!!

What a precious gift set! The crown is really the icing on the cake–who doesn’t think their very own baby girl is THE princess? My favorite gift for a newborn (and I never had this or sewed these when my girls were little) is a beautiful Sensory Ribbon Blanket and matching set of Burp Cloths. I find it a practical, sweet, hand-crafted gift option and it would be my go-to gift. (I of course may be partial because I sell these items!) However, it seems everyone loves a “lovey”!
