Today’s colorful outfit was inspired by my middle child, who is the most colorful character I’ve ever encountered. This girl loves life – she loves color, action, music, performing, debating – she loves everything, and she’s only four!
And she loves dressing up our little dressform as much as her older sister – they’ve named her Lindsay and they carry her around the house draped in their clothes/my clothes/fabric pieces/hats/jewelry. While I was packing up backpacks before school a couple weeks back, Grace was playing in my office with some pink beads. When I came home after delivering all the girls to school, I was surprised to find “Lindsay” sporting the cutest outfit!!

I’m not usually an orange girl, but I was LOVING the hot pink polka dots and the orange ribbon “belt” that Grace put together. So I wanted to make a colorful outfit for my colorful girl. I had intended to make this a dress, but as I finished constructing the bodice, I loved it so much as a top to pair with jeans, shorts, and skirts, that I decided to finish the pieces separately. My pattern needs some pretty good tweaking as I made A LOT of adjustments along the way, but I will try to post it if I work it out. The floral fabric was a clearance find for $1/yard – woohoo! though it isn’t 100% cotton and is probably some poly blend, which doesn’t feel as great to me, but Grace doesn’t notice or care.
For the skirt, I cut two panels of fabric and stitched them along the sides, then gathered the whole circle (with a ruffling foot) and sewed it on to a circle of wide elastic. Pretty simple and quick!! The skirt fabric is manufactured by Timeless Treasures Fabrics, Inc. – have you noticed how many orange and pink fabrics have hit the shelves lately?? Or have I just not noticed before with my usual focus on soft pastels?
Well, my colorful girl is quite happy with her colorful new outfit. I’d love to make a couple more pieces to mix and match with these, but I’m going to have to wait until I make a little more progress on my other projects.
What are you working on this week? Aren’t Mondays great? A whole week to look forward to!!
