This is a busy household! Juggling three kids with school and extracurricular schedules, two full-time jobs, pets, hobbies, and working on our fixer upper house requires planning and patience. It also requires that I stop and take care of myself daily. This is not the easiest thing for me as I tend to take care of all the must-dos first. Sound familiar? Over the last year, however, I have worked hard to shift “Me Time” from a frivolous luxury to a necessity – if I don’t take time for myself, I’m really not successful taking care of everyone else. In that spirit, I wanted to share some of the ways that I set aside time for myself and encourage you to prioritize self-care in your own busy lives. While I was checking out with a very full cart of groceries at Safeway last week, I rewarded myself with a few of my favorite magazines. Even though I spend hours every day looking at pictures and stories on the internet, nothing beats sitting down with a stack of heavy, glossy pages of an actual magazine, am I right?
My mom got me hooked on Sunset magazine years ago. If you live on the West Coast, this is such a wonderful magazine. I love trying new recipes and finding ideas for DIY projects. I also really like reading up on travel destinations and restaurants that I can actually plan to visit without traveling SO far from home. This one makes me feel connected to my home and surroundings – definitely a feel good bit of reading
Sometimes I come across recipes that I just have to try right then – like this Apple Cream Torte! Baking, of course, is another one of my absolute favorite ways to spend “Me Time,” especially in the fall. My husband takes the kids out for a long bike ride or to go swimming, and I love to spend a sunny afternoon in the kitchen trying out a new recipe. This Apple Cream Torte was unbelievably simple to make and it tastes delicious.
If I only have a short period of time or when I’m in a creative slump, I like to sit down with an indulgent treat and some coffee and flip through InStyle. I study the fabrics, the patterns, and the way the outfits are put together. This is the BEST sewing and style inspiration. It often gives me ideas for new techniques I want to experiment with or helps me get in the mood for seasonal sewing! It’s a surefire way to spark my creativity and well worth the time I spend to sit down and relax.
Freshening up my home and garden with colorful flowers or a quick DIY project boosts my spirits, also. September’s Sunset issue has the most amazing flower arrangements with fall’s favorite flowers – mums. I’m on the hunt for some of the more exquisite varieties that they introduced me to. So beautiful – I wish I could show you, but you’ll just have to see for yourself.
“Me Time” brings me relaxation, inspiration, and rejuvenation. I’d love to hear how you spend “Me Time!” Share a few of your favorite ways in the comments below!
