Crafting has been a passion of mine since I was a kid. I distinctly remember my mom ushering me outside to play in the fresh air when all I wanted to do was color or play with stickers or carve animals out of bars of soap. I still prefer to spend any free time being creative. My girls must have gotten the craft bug from me as they also love to craft and are constantly asking me to set something up for them. I am always wishing I had more time to research and collect materials for great projects for them to do. I recently received a gift card from Joann Fabric and Craft Stores to try out one of their kid’s craft projects. Their Cape Discovery online catalog has so many different ideas and my local store had a section dedicated to craft kits and supplies for completing the projects from the catalog.
I knew the girls would be disappointed if they didn’t all get to complete a project and so we settled on one that I thought all three of them could complete without my assistance and enjoy at their own individual levels. We were also limited by the inventory available at the store – seems there are a lot of other kids who love a well-planned craft, too!! I purchased enough safari animal masks for the girls to all choose which they wanted to do; I also picked up a variety of acrylic paints, glitter glue, and glitter.
I set the girls up at the kitchen table and let them work on their masks completely on their own. I helped when they asked for help, but I totally let them design their own animals without being my usual controlling self. They worked on the masks on and off over several days, coming back in to add glitter or jewel stickers here and there. When they were done, I set up my fabric backdrop clothes rack and staged a little puppet theater. The girls spent hours putting on performances with their animal masks – they used them more as puppets than as masks, but it didn’t matter – lots of fun!
